I just drove about 90 miles through the countryside from Porto Allegro to Caxias Do Sol, Brazil - it's way down southwest, about a two hour flight from Sao Paulo. I'm here on business for the next 8 days.
Plenty of VW's in Brazil. It's nice to see a junk yard with stacks of VW's - mostly Beetles, but an unusually high number of busses and transporters still in use. Shuttle vans, delivery vehicles - lots of busses.
Kinda' reminds me of the mid to late 70's with all the VW's (and pieces of VW's) still around. Of course, Beetles were made here until 2003, so I guess that explains a lot.
Wish I could ship a boatload home to Georgia! |

Why not stay there, and start exporting to the U.S.?!? You could make a fortune, and make alot of U.S. dubbers happy in the process!! _________________ 73 Standard |

That would be Mexico, Brazil stopped making bugs in the mid 90s.
Would be something to see though, I'm lucky these days if I see one other bug a week. |

jon65 and I will GLADLY help unload that boat! Float that sucker right up the Chattahoochee to West Point and I'll even store 'em for you.
Pick of the litter would be fine. |

Gimme' a couple of days to get some meetings outa' the way, and I'll walk the streets for some pics. Yes, I am actually working on a business trip. What the heck's up with that?!? On the way to dinner tonight, I saw a VW I have never seen before. It's a station wagon looking something, but not a 412 or fastback or notchback or station wagon. Or maybe it was somebody's idea of a joke. It was older because it still had the same emblem as old beetles and a rear engine. 'Course, he's flying by me in the opposite direction and I didn't get a picture. |

that's correct,
actually production stopped first in 1986, but restarted in 1993 and lasted until 1996, from 93 to 96 I think only 40K units were produced,
keep in mind that the Brazilian Beetle never adopted IRS or some of the other developments the Mexican model did, also the pre 1964 windows size was kept until 1996 (apart from the rear window)...
the aircooled bus was made until 2006, now it uses some other engine.
this was the last model from 96

Make sure you shoot some pics of the wrecking yard! Random shots on the street are ok, but VW junkyards are cool!

The "odd" beetle was indeed a Brasilia. I saw another couple of them on Saturday. The owner of the buggy (pics below - I know they go to the Kit Car forum!) told me what it was.
The junk yards are out in the country, and I saw them between here and the airport at Porto Allegro - about 70 km away. I probably won't get to stop and browse on the way back Tuesday.
A guy who worked at the plant I visited drives this to work.
There are a lot more service vehicles than I thought a few days ago. Many, many busses - both commercial and personal are on the streets as well as transporters. I've seen both single and double cab trucks loaded pretty good with different stuff - electrical contractor, tire delivery, etc.
Thanks for looking. I agree with Joel that I don't see but a couple of these old things a month in northwest Georgia - and most of them are the same ones. Haven't seen a transporter on the road in years! |

I snapped the only pics of "junk yard" type VW's at an antique store up in the mountains. I am not sure what type of hybrids these are, but they were complete. The owner said the one in the 1st picture was running. It had an engine I am not familiar with - possibly an 1100 - looks like no generator stand.
