hi guys, i recently reconnected the factory heat in the 78 transporter. i'm sealing up air leaks and closing off the cool air vents for the winter. my question is, has anyone insulated behind the panels? what r rating insulation? any problems encountered or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. i know there used to be a good thread on rustproofing and insulating a bus on type2 but the thread no longer works. thanks in advance from snow flurry in october pennsylvania! dave _________________ "Go smell the wind, go far. I put pink solid fanfold insulation (along with all sorts of rustproofing) behind all the panels in my Bus. I'm not sure of the R-value, but it keeps us warm in Chicago down to about 20 degrees. Any colder than that and I have to break out the catalytic propane heater. I can't recommend them enough. Get the one with the built-in fan - it sits perfectly in the walk-through.
By the way, the pink fanfold insulation has the advantage of not absorbing or holding water, unlike the NASA foil covered insulation. Besides the engine compartment where there is enough heat to deal with any moisture, the foil stuff is like a wick in the interior... |

Here's an interesting heat bandaid that my wife came up with when we were living in Sun Valley, Idaho... We insulated everything, ran ALL the heat up front, and then my wife hung a clear shower curtain behind the front seats from ceiling to floor. It kept ALL the heat up front, we could push it aside and still get into the back, and I could still see out all the windows! It looked lame but it WORKED. When it can get to -40F, you don't give a damn what it looks like! |

You could use a flexible dryer vent hose, or something similar. Tape it to the out let, and run it up front under the bottom of your curtain. If it's long enough, you can even use it for a quick defroster, by pointing it at the window! Jeremy |

What exactly is fanfold insulation and where can I get some? It's just about time for me to start getting my heat togather and this stuff sounds like the thing for me. |

To send the heat up front-right lever down left lever halfway down. I drove my bus for years before I read the owners manual and frigured this out. People with more than 2 levers read your owners manual. |

Fanfold insulation is very dense solid core insulation about 1/4 thick. It comes folded up like an accordian, hence the name. You can get a bundle of it at Home Depot very cheap - around $5 for more than enough. It's easy to cut to size and can fit anywhere - behind panels, interior of the car on firewalls, etc. |

Wouldn't that depend on what model the bus was? in a Kombi or Panel there is no rear heater outlet. Right? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.
