|
|
I installed a new muffler and tailpipe today using the FAS muffler hanger kit to eliminate any future cracked exhaust parts that can occur with inline 4 conversions. FAS shipped the kit from Maine to Oregon in 2 days. The engineering and quality seem very high.
The fully adjustable SS muffler straps hang from rubber dampeners that are attached to custom brackets connected to the engine cradle mount points on the body.

Can't wait to finish the job tomorrow and see how it performs. |

Thanks for posting the pics and descriptions. Those SS clamps look familiar. I'd found and installed those same type for my swap a few years ago. They are very skookum.
I'll be curious to know if you find any transfer of exhaust noise to body. Likely you won't!

Overall, exhaust noise inside the van is sharply reduced. Getting the adjustment of the hangers was much easier than I thought. Wish I had done this a long time ago. |

So your exhaust was mounted to the engine before?
Great to hear of the improvement!

One of the brackets was bolted to the oil pan. I'm not sure if bolting to the engine is true of all inline conversions or just the Tiico, but FAS has done a good job engineering a solution that mounts to the body. |

Thread resurrection as I try to get some ideas to solve my exhaust note issues.
What muffler are you using with the FAS hanger kit ?
FAS suggested the 1.9l for the kit. I picked up an Ernst 1.9 and I'm not overly happy with it's dampening capabilities.
It is not body resonance but rather a throaty sound from idle right through to the dreaded 3400-4200rpm range. I have an internal rattle in the muffler at 2800 and the highway range gives me a headache listening to it.
Making matters worse, I think something has possibly failed inside the muffler. At the 750km mark I now have an overall increase in noise that I don't think is related to intake or body resonance at this point. _________________ John.

I made a custom exhaust using rubber hangars similar to the FAS kit. The muffler I'm using is for an 80s or 90s Ford F150 along with a 9" long glasspack. It's not loud and sounds good, even running down the highway at nearly 4000 rpms (I have an automatic).

Where did you find a 9" glasspack muffler?

That's some nice work you did there, beauty.
Too bad the glasspack sits right where my CAT is ... I'll have to check out the muffler as a possibility. _________________ John.

It took a few tries to get everything where I wanted it.
The glasspack probably provides about the same amount of noise reduction as the CAT would. _________________ Kenneth

I'm using the ABA dual outlet manifold with a custom downpipe. 1.75" primaries and 32" long if I remember correctly. I do design/drafting at a metal fab shop. So I just laid everything out, tacked it together, then brought it to work and one of the guys in the shop welded it up.

I bought an Audi 80 manifold, but I am unsure of what to do for a down pipe. Should I try to get an Audi 80 down pipe (if I can even find one), even if it is just for the flange.
I finishing this until winter is over, but I figure if I should look for the 80 down pipe, I can start now. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

I would foregt the downpipe and just use the flange/and/or gasket to fab a flange and start the downpipe from scratch |
