Today I fixed my '71 Convertible rear panels. I removed them, let them warm in the sun, sprayed some 3M aerosol adhesive 77 in, stretched them down and shot a few staples. I then lubed the rear window gears and reinstalled the panels, looks much better.

Note to self: re-do the panels every 42 years.

You know the rules around here ... pics or it didn't happen!

Wish I were still driving mine, instead of the never ending rebuild.

Mine on my 74 Convertible were HORRIBLE!!!!!!

I ended up putting new wood behind them.......page 13 on this link....

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...;start=240

Anyway, I started with this.......

I had the spray adhesive on the shelf. The only cost was for the fabric dye. I had the Masonite from a previous task, it was also my Hurricane Sandy don't forget about me, wire down sign!

And ended up with this..... A little wavy in spots but Worlds better!

Which became this...... (Don't like white interiors)

That's funny Dave. I'm thinking of putting a white interior in the Elm Green 70 Standard I just started on. I actually burned my legs on the black seats in my convertible once. Yep, the woven pattern burned right into my skin.

Especially my driver side rear panel was in bad shape, the vinyl part; the masonite showed, the vinyl was hanging loose. The vinyl on that side didn't come near reaching to the bottom. The masonite parts are fine. Anyway, I did not remove the rear seat bottom again to give a better look in these photos.

I also glue-gunned two hidden rips on the white vinyl rear seat bottom. I had the '71 re-upholstered in 1979 for about $130 total, so it's held up pretty well.

I like that your are able to keep the original parts in service. I still have the original panels for mine, just don't know if I can save them.

Actually I'm "lucky"?
My PO had reupholstered with a "velvet" fabric seat panel. Sadly, it is a Pukey Gold/Bronze/brown color with black vinyl. Brown and Red are not two colors I'd put together an consider them pleasing. Add in the white door panels! Crying or Very sad

I sprayed the brown fabric with a dark grey color dye.
Now I've got black door panels, black carpet, and black/grey seats. Looks fine with the maroon colored car. The fabric seats prevent branding from sun baked seats.

Plus........
I Saved myself a small pile of money! Smile
