Today I fixed my '71 Convertible rear panels. I removed them, let them warm in the sun, sprayed some 3M aerosol adhesive 77 in, stretched them down and shot a few staples. I then lubed the rear window gears and reinstalled the panels, looks much better.
Note to self: re-do the panels every 42 years. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. You know the rules around here ... pics or it didn't happen!
Wish I were still driving mine, instead of the never ending rebuild. _________________ Brian

That's funny Dave. I'm thinking of putting a white interior in the Elm Green 70 Standard I just started on. I actually burned my legs on the black seats in my convertible once. Yep, the woven pattern burned right into my skin. _________________ Brian

Especially my driver side rear panel was in bad shape, the vinyl part; the masonite showed, the vinyl was hanging loose. The vinyl on that side didn't come near reaching to the bottom. The masonite parts are fine. Anyway, I did not remove the rear seat bottom again to give a better look in these photos.
Before (and before the retractable seat belts were installed):
After:
I also glue-gunned two hidden rips on the white vinyl rear seat bottom. I had the '71 re-upholstered in 1979 for about $130 total, so it's held up pretty well. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I like that your are able to keep the original parts in service. I still have the original panels for mine, just don't know if I can save them. _________________ Brian
