It's to use during my week on week off summer schedule with the kids. Thought it would be fun to use during what I call "camp mom" So...week long trips around Ontario. We have fabulous places to go camping and day tripping here. I don't really feel like putting up a tent...this is better for me. I like to drive. I want to have a little fun with my kids before they start having summer jobs and generally don't want to hang out with their mom anymore Smile
However, the first trip will be from PEI to Ontario and that's a good few days across the country. Beautiful. So if it doesn't work....I will know during the first trip back from purchasing it. I will try to post a picture of it.

Wow! That looks super nice! If they mechanic put as much effort into the power train, electrical and brakes/suspension, then it looks like some great miles (kilometers) ahead of you!

Hopefully, it's not make-up and rouge, and the people who did the work did it all...and right!

well...here's hoping. He's a mechanic and it has been his vehicle for the past 6 years seasonally. He won't sell it to just anyone. He's picky. Wants a good home. I will know more this afternoon and give details

Wow. That bus looks great. If the underside is as good as the outside that will be a great bus. Good luck getting your kid's out of it. Wink

so far....

Mechanical
· 2L engine (which is not normal for a ’73 Canadian import – likely this was a special import vehicle)
o As far as he knows, this is fully rebuilt
o New cylinder bores
o New heads
o Etc.
o Single, twin-barrel carburettor (rather than two carbs)
o Cruises at 100-110km/h on highway
· Automatic Transmission (again, not normal for a ’73 – Autos seem to have been first available over here in ’75…)
· New tyres
· New brakes
· Non-original alternator (AC Delco) – higher output

Body
· Repainted last year
· No rust holes except underneath battery – new metal has been welded in there
· Underside is “as good as the outside”
· Wheel arches, rocker panels (sills) all solid – not metal welded in as far as he can see and no rust
· Evidence of some rust around the windscreen – need to check this!
· All interior appears to be good and original – front seats are slightly faded
· New rubber seals around pop-top
· New chrome surrounds to headlamps
· New side lights

So far?

This bothers me a little. Ddin't he tell you this was his personal, well cared for bus for the last six years?

The single carb may be an issue. Ask him if it's a Weber Progressive. You'll get A LOT of opinions about that if it is.

Windscreen rot along bottm edge is common. Left unchecked for many years, it will just get worse, and it's not an insurmountable project...if you're toolled up and know how to do steel work. Bubbling paint is the first sign, and the rust is well underway under the rubber seal. That said, you can drive it around for a few years, but it needs to be addressed soon.

Rust below the windshield is one of the first places these busses rust! I repaired mine with bondo but it only looked good for 1 year now it's back. If it had been repaired when painted it would not be showing up now! Consider the bus may not have had a full down to metal restoration, it may be a good bus still but will likely start to show signs of much more rust sooner than it would if it were as nice as some that can be found in that price range.

The Tremclad green over almost everything on that bus scares me, don't pull the trigger until you've posted way more photos, clear closeups of the seemingly boring areas too, not those far away phone pics. The mystery carbed 2L screams "I don't give a shit, just get the MOFO running so I can sell it", be careful, where else were corners cut?

Since you have three kids that are growing up, you might consider what is in t=store in the coming years. They will get bigger, and the '73 and earlier campers really only sleep 3, because there is the hammock up top, and the bed below.

I would strongly recommend that you consider the Berlin camper layout, which started in 1976 -- it offers a lot more usable room, with that damned cabinet removed from being right in front of the sliding door.

From '74 onwards, you get the poptop hinged at the rear, which provides for a full bed up top for two. This can sleep four comfortably. But in '74 and '75, the cabinetry still limits the space a lot.

So, I would recommend looking for a perhaps not so shiny but still mechanically and structurally sound 1976 - 1979 Westfalia.

Since you are in the Toronto area, look up Scott Lyons at German Supply http://www.germansupply.com. He's located in Etobicoke. He would be a great resource to help locate or evaluate a potential purchase.

Originally it was orange, the knucklehead decided to repaint the outside green. I think you can do much better for 14k. I'd keep looking.

For a little extra I found this in the classifieds

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1445022

The description it sounds like it was restored properly. Although the pictures make it look a little greenish, Dakota beige is more tan.

Yes, that is insanely over priced! Too many negatives to even list.
You can do way better than that.

Benry, since you're planning on traveling with your kids, you really need the best bus you can buy. There is a phenomenon that exists within VW owners that we seek out "homes" that will love our "kids" and that tends to pull on the heartstrings of an unfamiliar buyer.
That's a nice looking bus from pictures, but it's a high price point. As was already told. Added, that in that price bracket you can get ALOT more bus for your buck, one that might even work better for a family.
As was suggested, you should look into a Berlin configuration. You might like it more, because it moves the sink out of the door opening for easier ingress and egress. As well, you gain a sleeping position (the bus seats 4 and you can sleep 4) The bus Jeff posted earlier, is a nice set up... It's not close to you, but you might find a late bus closer to you for about the same price point. Heck, might be worth calling the guy in TX and haggling... I mean, who wouldn't love to see their bus go off to a loving home with a mother and kids who will care for the bus and enjoy it for all it has to offer, right? Wink
