Hi, we have a 71 bus and I want to paint a mural on the headliner. I was wondering if anyone can recomend a type/brand of paint to use that hopefully wont crack when dry. |

I have a friend that did this and it worked great. He had a nice clean white headliner and he was a great artist. He just took nice colored sharpie markers. He drew in the style of the beetles late graphic art, greatful dead bears, led zepplin logos, pink Floyd, etc...... His ceiling was a total TRIP.......
Best of luck.
Post some pics if you can. _________________ 1979 Bay & 1978 II Westy Current Owner, 1963 Beetle & 1972 Beetle & 1976 SquareBack (Sold) & 1976 Westy (Wrecked) & 1978 Bay (Sold to pay for Wedding) |

I refurbished a 78 Westfalia a couple of years ago that the previous owner had painted on the headliner. She got a little wild with water based latex paint and the headliner was damaged and delaminated from the moisture. If you use water based latex then use it sparingly because it can delaminate the headliner before it dries. I replaced the headline with 3 mm PVC foamboard that I purchased at a sign shop. It looked great and the foamboard is practically indestructible. I also use the foamboard to make kick panels. Brand name is Komatex if anybody is interested. Good luck. |

If you have a Westy with the channels that accept 3 mm plywood, then use Baltic Birch, which comes in 5'x5' sheets. Use your old headliner for a template.
I redid mine with stain and polyurethane. But a mural would be deeply and abidingly cool. What's the subject?
Charles Ryder Brideshead Revisited Architectural?
Che Guevara Revolutionary?
Grateful Dead?
New Deal WPA Populist?
Nice trees and mountains?
The opportunities are limitless. I think I'll start over. |
