|
|
Some crazy vw van fellow decided to open his family Baja whale trip to others. 10 vans showed up at the appointed day and time and 10 vans headed off for a great 9 day Baja trip. Vans came from Washington, Virginia, Oklahoma, Oregon, Arizona, and California. There were 2- Bostig Zetecs (one turbo), 1- Subaru 2.2, 7- 2.1 WBX. We covered about 1500 miles, some dirt. There were 2 flats, 1 WBX fuel leak, 1 mysterious WBX issue.
Each year the Grey Whales migrate by the 1000s from Alaska to Baja to meet up in some lagoons to give birth and party. It is a spectacle for sure.
More details to follow.
More photos to follow.

We were just at San Ignacio for valentines day (we kissed a baby whale on valentine day) and I'm ready to go again! The van isn't though, rode hard and put away wet. But it got us there and back. Only saw 1 other vanagon while we were down there, maybe we'll get to join a group next year.
Looking forward to hearing more! |

OOOOHH, vanagon-caravan.
I was in Baja through December. Worth it, epic views, cool Mexican culture, serious wildlife.
I would say it is a definite must drive for west coast folks.
Edit, someone seems to be getting a little "handsy" in the third photo... _________________ 2004 Dodge/Mercedes Sprinter (Custom Camper)

I saw you! We actually stayed at the same beach one night, but I didn't make it over to say hi. I did stop once when I saw your van and took a pic of my van beside it.... I'm gonna go find it. I was pretty sure you'd be on here somewhere. _________________ 86 syncro CHC, NorthWesty subbie 2.5, decoupler, locker, custom interior, 225/75r16 Duratrack's on CLK's, Toyo cabin heater, ARB fridge, 300w Zamp Solar, Gowesty bumpers/skid/rails, Fiama awning

I'm pretty sure his Roadhaus has a 2.2 Subie. He is still upstairs asleep or I would ask him.
EDIT: he says it has always been a 2.2 Subaru from a 90 Subaru.

Yes! We saw you drive by, had you been in eyeshot I would have come by to oggle your ride
As for the paint job, its temporary paint. It has started to grow on me, I think I may need to make it more permanent. The Baja Californians sure liked it. _________________ 2004 Dodge/Mercedes Sprinter (Custom Camper)

It was a great whale watching trip for sure. We also did a little kayak fishing a few days too. Most nights we stayed at what passes for private campgrounds in Baja. That ranged from nothing but a pit toilet some nights to hot showers and flushing toilets on others. One day we were running late and had to spend the night outside of a "truck stop" to avoid driving at night. The big danger is range animals on the road at night and we saw plenty in a short distance as night fell. One was a very fresh kill blocking the oncoming lane and we knew we had to stop as soon as we found a spot we could all park. Luckily we soon came to an open cafe with a large dirt parking area and we spent a pretty good night camped right there. They even let us use the restrooms out behind the cafe, shared with the couple of simple motel rooms they had. Here we are the morning after.

Man that looks and sounds like a great trip. Glad to hear you guys had fun and all made it back without a tow rope.
Val and I are going to have to find a way to get away so we can tag along on one of these. _________________ Tim Potts
