Recently I found 2 rear 356 drums and backing plates.
The drums are VW cast iron drums with aluminum fins cast around the edges.
The backing plates have "square" 4 bolt mount slave cylinders on top, star wheel double adjusters on bottom, and the middle 4 holes that mount to the axle tube are "open", meaning, the holes are not O shaped but they are U shaped with one open side.
I'm still cleaning them up, so I will get pics soon. But in the meantime, anyone know exactly what year these are?
Real early 356 drum info is pretty hard to find. _________________ Mike

Nice find! Those brakes where used from 1950(ish) to later 1952 when Porsche finally developed their own aluminum drum and components. |

The drums look just like this. I don't have a pic of the backing plates yet.

There are at least two companies that I know of that sell the aluminum rings to be pressed on VW drums for reproductions.
Not sure how to tell originals from reproductions.
For example:

Hey, that's interesting. Maybe I will leave these in their natural state to show they are real. Look for an ad on EBay soon.... _________________ Mike

I was reading the article in an old Pano the other day about Porsche #1. It was upgraded from cables to juice brakes and then latter the brakes were upgraded again to larger brakes.
The article didn’t mention anything about what was done with the take offs. But its nice to dream that maybe you stumbled upon something special! _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I'll post the Ebay ad number here when I put them up this weekend. I'm going to start the bidding low, so it might be an interesting auction. I have no idea what these things are worth. _________________ Mike

Rare. I have been around 356s 'a little' for about 50 years and know of only 2 times I've seen those drums on a transaxle. The first was on a crash-box in the early '70s and the second.....no, I take that back....I was going to say they were on a trans with a '51 I sold to Dr. Brett Johnson....but now I'm not so sure...yep, rare brakes. I'm looking forward to auction reports.... _________________ Bruce Baker
