So it's getting Warmer each day and I wanted to do some work on my bus, but guess what? Where's the key? I lost it!

So I found a locksmith that can make me a key by the OEM code but I'm having a hard time finding it.

I don't want to pull the ignition switch, as I really don't want to drill anything.

I had two different keys, which opened drivers door, hatch, sliding door and ignition switch. The pass door only locked from inside.

So now my goal is to find a key code that is different from my driver door because chances are it should open the ignition.

I pulled the hatch latch lock, but there is no key code there.... Only a serial number, how is that possible?

What is the number from the hatch, are you sure it's a serial number?
I would pull the passenger's side handle and use that code. It should be easy to spot.

I will let the locksmiths here on Samba do specific explanations. But from memory they were R or L coded keys. Does the number from the hatch lock have either letter in it?

Notice code on this key as an example of code on your hatch lock

Get with Steelerbus (that's his username) and check out his posts. He is a locksmith by trade. His posts will show you exactly where to look for the codes specific to your bus.

Hope that helps!

your choices are pull the driver's door handle and read the lock code on the inside of the handle or pull the hatch lock and read the code on the tang. Give that to one of the locksmiths here. I used Gabe at Gabe's lock and key. You can also send him the passenger lock if you want it tumbled to match.

Forgot to mention I had two different keys which operated the ignition, drivers door, sliding door and latch but I'm pretty sure the passenger side one didn't have a matching key.

I'm thinking if I can find two different numbers between all the locks I can try my luck for the ignition switch.

There is an R in the code but its at the end and doesn't follow the pattern.

$$$ also my sliding door lock is stuck because the previous owner stripped the Phillips head really bad, haven't figured out how to take that one out yet.

Cheers.

That's the part number for the handle, the code is stamped into the side of the rounded part the end of which is closest in your pic.

Thanks bus daddy!

Got the code R066 ... The first two numbers aren't there, or I can't make them out. I tried sanding it and steelwooling lightly to clear it up with no luck.

I wonder if they can make a code from the last 4 digits....

So far none of my handles match. And I think that means the hatch lock is the same as the if ignition.

I'll keep diggin.

It might not be a bad idea to dig them all out and sent them to Steelersbus for some rehabilitation and matching up.

Try rubbing the area with a Sharpe then rub it off quickly. It should leave the black in the numbers. I have had to use a jewelers loop to see them better but then again I am getting old....
