how does this fit with the shifter box that seems to extend into the center space in the tire?

It doesn't interfere with anything. Keep in mind that I have an auto tranny. This may not work with a manual. To fit the 15" spare I also had to remove the steel, upper restraining rods and install bolts and nylock nuts to create hinges for the clamshell. I also added as many spacers as possible between the clamshell and body at the mounting bolt to gain a little more space.

For those that have had the clamshell vacant for a while, does anybody else have a terrible rattle coming from that area due to the clamshell being empty? I'm wondering if a rubber washer at the front bolt will do the trick.

| The best simple solution I saw was someone used a spare tire (no wheel). They cut the top sidewall back so it was easy to access and stuffed odds and ends into the tire. Probbaly need to cut a few drain holes in the bottom sidewall too. I'm sure that would help with rattling too. |

There was a topic awhile back, where someone built a water tank by plastic welding two jugs together and then mounted it inside the clam shell. Seems like a nice spot for an extra water tank if you need more water.
That LP tank looks pretty neat too, except the price tag and the fact that 11 gals is a lot of extra weight assuming you fill it up.

Have you tightened the safety bolt down? I've been traveling with an empty clamshell for awhile now in my Syncro Westy with no rattles at all.
I put a regular sized spare in there for long off road trips, (have a decoupler) but leave it empty otherwise to save weight.

I used a section of a fiberglass water tank and a big gray trash can lid with three lockable snaps. I carry most of my spares and recovery gear in it.

For me that rattle was coming from the springs/rods that hold the clamshell on. I removed them and got some bolts to re-attach the clamshell to use for storage. |
