I thought I would update my thread with my latest piece(s). I made these candlesticks for my friend as a wedding gift. I had all the parts in my stash. Each one is made of 5 pieces. The cam sprockets are Kia, the connecting rods are Ford, the spider gears are Chrysler and the valve springs are Ford.
I welded the 5 pieces together that make up each candlestick, cleaned and degreased everything, scrubbed with brass, plastic and steel brushes to get every nook and cranny, and then polished a few spots on the connecting rods with 2,000 grit to clean those areas and give them a nice contrasting shine. Everything else is its natural oil pickled finish. I then coated the whole thing in chrome wax/polish to protect from rusting. I wanted something that wouldn't leave it oily or change the color or shine of the different finishes on the metals. These are the finished product.

I realized that I haven't updated my thread in awhile.
I made my friends a candlestick for Christmas a few years ago.
From the top down, it is made from a Ford Escort valve spring, a Briggs and Stratton V-Twin cam sprocket, Subaru Forester C.V. axle cage, Subaru 2.5 timing sprocket, two Dodge Caravan transmission gear assemblies.
The top part spins thanks to the bearing in the Subaru timing sprocket.
I put small self stick cork pads under the candlesticks and self stick felt pads under the other art pieces so they don't scratch anything they are on.
I have some more pics of stuff I have made that I will be added to this post very soon.

How do you clean the oily parts? Sodium hydroxide bath? |

Purple power bath, I let them soak for a few days, scrub with plastic or brass bristled brushes and then rinse really well. For the stuff like these candlesticks that I leave in bare metal, I try not to get too aggressive.
Once that is done I weld everything, clean again with mild soapy water and and the scrub brushes and then rinse well, dry it off thoroughly and then they get coated several times in a chrome polish I like to use. I've had no rust issues at all years later. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

Thank you! I do plan on making a bunch of stuff very soon and selling them in various places. The stuff I posted here has all been gifts.
I'm currently working on another art project for my fiancé, Mary. I should have it done in the next few weeks.
I'm going to be posting some pictures of that soon. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"
