Wondering who has which speakers in their doors? Guess I may as well ask which you have in the back as well, in case I decide to do that as well and/or if anyone else wants to know what fits where!?
Will probably get them at Bestbuy in the US, as they're easy to pick-up and/or return if there is a problem.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Car-Audio/Car-Speakers...r+speakers
I just want simple basic nice sound good kind of speakers. Not big fancy expensive blaring loud set that requires a subwoofing thing.
My Sony Stereo if that matters:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6568745#6568745
And, if you tell me which ones are great, I promise not to try and install them myself. Not going there, the driver's side door one currently there is broken. So, if it's not the speaker (itself), then it's the wire and I'm not running no speaker wire through that little defective dumb tube that goes through the door b/c with out fail, I'll break something else! LOL I was actually kind of hoping it was the stereo that was there that was causing the problem w/ the speaker, but it wasn't, so I'll bet it's the wire...

I have Pioneers in my doors. They don't hit the dash with the doors closed and the gray matches the late interior perfect . Stock size. _________________ 1973 Westy (shared birthday)

Thanks! Love my colours to match! Do you remember the size/type and/or where you got them?

Thank you! I always appreciate links too, never know if what I find is what the person was talking about! LOL
Did a google search to see if I could turn up some more and found this:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=561251
Then, since I hadn't found that when I searched here and found that odd, found this:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...p;start=20
Both give more information and the fact that I may not just be able to go to the store and have a new one popped in it's place! Aaarggg!

my van had 4" pioneers in the stock location of the doors when I bought it and they sounded terrible and didn't go very loud. I parted out another car and it had some Polk Audio 4" speakers that I replaced the pioneers with and the sound is much improved. Problem with the pioneers was they were obviously the inexpensive ones with foam speaker surround and a tiny magnet. The Polks have a rubber surround material and the magnet is about 2-3 times bigger than the pioneers.
Overall the stereo still sounded awful IMO with little to no bass until I added a subwoofer. Still have the crappy stock speakers in the rear though, those are next to be replaced. _________________ '88 vanagon*****'91 gti 1.8t*****'04 r32*****'11 suburban z71 |

Tam,
I use a component speaker system which uses a small tweeter for high notes, and a two-way speaker which houses the mid range and bass.
The system uses a couple outboard crossovers (which separate the high and low notes) that I tucked behind the glovebox.
In the picture you can see the tweeter mounted on a black piece of thin wood mounted over the stock opening, the larger two-way speaker is lower on the door (under the map pocket) where there is a opening in the metal structure of the door big enough for the bulk of the speaker. (sorry, I don't have picture of that right now. I took these photos for the cup holders)
This system requires a bit more work to mount but has the advantage of much better sound than a small speaker mashed between the door and dash.
But less work and expense of a sub-woofer/amp system.
Mine are Diamond. Here's a link to some examples.

I sort of built up to this system after replacing the stock speakers and installing the changer...that wasn't good enough. Added two amps and the sub...better but not great. Added the mid-base drivers to the door..perfect. This setup with a clean 850 watts of power thumps very nicely
The van is so large that even with a 12" sub and a few hundred watts firing out of the rear closet, the front end begs for a mid base driver.
Upgraging the rear speakers helped a lot..with enclosures built into the AC cabinet to tighten them up:
Lastly, the sub. The closet is still 100% usable...however now lined with dynamat to keep it from resonating/rattling.

Thank you everyone! Especially for the pictures!
I went and looked at some 4" Alpine ones today. Oddly, all the Alpine ones are $99 here. The guy told me to get them online in the US! LOL[url]

Thank you, especially for the pictures! I really like how you slowly, added to yours until you were happy with it! Really, right now, one working speaker on the driver's side would make me happy, but new ones, over all would be cool too!

Also a thread on speakers w/ power windows. Would have thought that'd make it easier, not harder! LOL

The 4" Boston Acoustics I have in the door and the back cabinet sound rather nice. No mods other than installing the crank handle extension kit from Bus Depot.
My Pioneer power unit has an equalizer on it that boost the base. Not the boom boom base but good enough for my music taste.
I did run all new speaker wire and a separate ground wire....don't know why VW didn't wire it this way at the factory??. |

I have a set of Pioneer's (can't remember the exact model). I was looking at them at Best Buy for $99 a pair, came home and looked on CL and found the exact ones for $20,score. that was 4 years ago, still working fine. pair of Jensen Triax III's in the back, with all 4 speakers running off a Dr. Crankenstein amp.also,I just moved the 6" Bazooka tube from under the back seat to under the glove box. sounds great. |

I was interested in keeping the stock look when I replaced all 4 speakers. I should add, we do not blast the stereo. When I did replace my speakers, I came across this thread.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=458623
I purchased the speakers from Crutchfield and replaced the rear speaker wire with individual runs since the 82 used a common ground. I am extremely happy with the results. _________________ ☮️ |

Hey Den, what size are those speakers that you put in the rear? I have 4" Polks all around and while they sound ok I would love to get a little more bass without the hassle and aux battery drain that a sub would introduce.
I just haven't gotten around to measure to what will fit the cabinet. Is there anything that limits to the depth of what speakers will fit? _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

I'm going back to stock! Just found a pair at a local boneyard and got 'em to replace the aftermarket ones installed by the PO. Tired of the grilles falling off or scraping my knuckles when rolling the window down or up.
Dude, looks like you could use a window crank I passed up on that van. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |
