I was getting a crackling at higher volume from all four of my stock speakers.

I figured the speakers were old and/or not up to the power of the newer head unit. 50w x 4

I installed a pair of 4" Pioneers in my front doors and I still have the crackling. I discovered that the crackle is more pronounced and at a lower volume when I have the fader set either to front or back. If I have the fader set further to the front those speakers crackle and when I set them to the rear the rears crackle.

Anyone know how to diagnose this? I have another pair of Pioneers to install in the rear but would like to know what the problem is before I install them.

Hope this is a good thread to post this question. Would this be a potential location for a speaker (with a spacer most likely)? Thinking of putting a 5 1/2 there with a separate tweeter. Wondering if someone has a trim panel removed and can tell me how clearance there is to the window? Would the back of the speaker need to be protected from water?

Thanks

The glass mounts maybe 1/4" deeper than the vertical metal bar just to the right of the circle which is the window regulator.

Bumping this back up to add my new front door speakers. The original Blaupunkts were shot; replaced them with Rockford-Fosgates:

Plug-n-play in my '90. They just barely clear the dash.

I have 4" polks specifically because they claimed to produce decent bass from a 4" speaker. Not impressed, guess I fell for it. I'm sure Bose could do it... for $200 each...

Anyway, put a Blaupunkt - GTb 8 A under the back seat and I can't say enough good about it.

Yeah, that'd probably be helpful, eh? Embarassed

Rockford-Fosgate Prime R14X2

I'm no audiophile; I just wanted speakers that would fit, look kind of OEM in the doors (went with Pioneers for the rear), and produce sound good enough to hear with the windows down on the highway. So, with that said, compared to the blown "tinny" originals, they sound great! Very Happy

Well, until I feel more comfortable with significantly hacking/modifying my Van, I opted to find a some speakers (JBL GTO 329) that would fit the original housing so that I could keep the stock look.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLuQbJYjWx0/

I did the same with the rear speakers. The speakers do lack a bit of bass, but they are obviously better than the stock speakers. Eventually, I'll add some 6x9s under the rear bench and possibly a sub in the closet like @denwood did back on the first page.

Blaupunkt Blue Magic CL 100 4-Inch 155-Watt Coaxial Speaker System. Purchased last year, now discontinued, installed last week. I will be using the stock grills.

Working on them now since I can't get any sound out of them. Some wires are not connected in the back of the dash. PITA but won't give up.

Replaced to old 4" speakers with some Boston Acoustics. Two in the door and two in the overhead rear cabinet. Ran new wire and separate ground. For my taste they sound fine. Not sure if BA still make them but worth a look see.

MBQuart 5.25" flush install. These fit amazingly well. I found a NOS set on eBay. I haven't installed the tweeter yet. These can be converted to coax or separates. The window crank clears the grill without spacers.

JBL GTO 329

Perfect fit inside the stock grill housings after prying out the anemic stock speakers and gluing in the good ones. Totally stealth and they sound awesome.

I just got done installing those exact speakers into a '90 MV. They just fit the opening in the doors, but I had to file out the openings in the rear cabinet. I chose them specifically because of the grilles. They're pretty inexpensive as well.

$20.00 wonders at Bestbuy.
The window handle will hit them.
GoWesty has the bent window handle to clear them

I just installed the $20 speakers SteveM recommends. They sound great! I finally have bass up front. But I left off the plastic ring with "Kenwood" on it and my window cranks don't hit the speaker. And the speakers look ok without that ring. Best $20 upgrade I've spent on the van.
