I have 2 6" kenwood speakers in each door. I removed the 4" ones in the back and took out my woofer and amp to. The pooch did not like the bass or the tunes when he is trying to relax in the back when I'm driving. I am still happy with this setup.

Really I don't care about your speakers when I see that door panel!
That's great!

Perfect fit inside the stock grill housings after prying out the anemic stock speakers and gluing in the good ones. Totally stealth and they sound awesome.

I'm following your lead on this....but how did you get the stock speakers out?

I see other people cutting the plastic and glueing back together?

Heat gun?

Flat blade screwdriver to break the surrounding support and then just pry it out.

Might be slightly off thread.
But, i need a quick nudge int he right direction.
I have a 1990 with power mirrors and power windows. Stock.

Someone give me a quick step by step on getting the door dissasembled so I can get a new set of speakers in? The Bentley is a bit sparse on direction here.

many thanks

The speakers screw into the housing, if you are using the stock speaker grills you can just unscrew them.

Otherwise remove both door handles, door crank (pop off the plastic to expose the screw), lower vent. Then carefully pull on the door trim panel. It's just held in which clips. Be gentle and don't force anything.

PS this worked perfectly. Glad I didn't have to cut the grills like others have.

I put 6 1/2" two way speakers in my front doors and they sound great! (Polk DB652.) They fit into the original openings wihtout any cutting sheet metal at all! I did have to cut the "ears" off the speakers for a better fit. I moved the window crank tube behind the sheet metal and mounted the speakers with two screws. I kept the original door cutouts so it still looks stock. I cut the fronts off of the old speaker grills and glued them back on the door panels. The speakers sound twice and good and even after losing about 25% of the surface area due to the smaller opening, I am still WAY ahead. I can hear music and understand speech on the radio when I am heading down the highway.

I did something similar to the last poster a few years ago, but got some new 6.5” drivers and tweeters and have been looking at alternative mounting options (not behind the door panel) and came across this thread.
Pics of the current setup:

5.25”s in the rocky mountain westy door pockets. Tweeters on the dash with double sided tape.

This time around I’m probably going to see if the RMW door pockets can be modified for 6.5”s, or make a new panel to replace it. Tweeters will hopefully be more integrated, but still on the A pillars. Going to lose the 5.25s and try to run a proper 3 way active system instead of splitting the signal to the 6.5s and 5.25s like I’ve been doing.

The kick panels and lower door card mounting options in this thread gave me some ideas. thanks for that!

I am running Kicker DSC350 speakers in stock speaker grills. I cut out the factory speakers with my dremil and installed the Kickers with a bit of JB Weld putty. I am also running Ford Taurus window cranks which have at least twice the clearance of Vanagon cranks. I don't really need the clearance but I think they are a little more attractive.

Haha! Thank you. It's been a long and arduous task and it isn't yet complete. It's a "spare time" task and spare time, for me, is at a premium.

I have 6" Focal in MDF panels fitted in the stock location and an old alpine powered sub between the front seats.

I installed the Focal Access 165 A3 6.5-Inch 3-Way Component Speaker Kit, https://amzn.to/3v3aKkw. This kit comes with 6.5" woofers, 4" midranges, and tweeters which I mounted at the corners of the dash. It also comes with a pair of crossovers which I mounted under each seat. The 6.5" speakers took a minor modification of the door metal to fit. I used acoustic foam speaker baffles behind all the speakers in the door. This is my third Westy and third speaker installation and this time I got it right. I'm blown away by the quality of the audio these speakers produce. I can't imagine what the higher end Focal's must sound like.

Mine are 2 way in the door. Not too exciting to look at, probably best that way.

Like one of the previous posters I bought the cheap Rockford Fosgate R14x2.

I was pleased not to have to remove the door panel, the old pioneers came right out and the new ones went right in without any changes.

The sound, well, it's just okay. When I redo the door panels as it gets new paint i will upgrade to something better but for the price they are fine.
