So many fires lately, I just bought a battery isolator switch and am planning on installing it somewhere out of the way like up inside the right wheel well. It's my fear of re-ignition of the fire that freaks me out. |

These stories have me putting a reserve switch in for fuel cutoff. I went and bought the wrong one (for a beetle) but will still be attempting the install. My hope is that if needed, I could turn the switch manually.
Am I being too hopeful? _________________ Kevin Albrecht

I'm putting in a cable. No way in hell would you catch me climbing under a bus with flaming fuel dripping off. Mine is slightly lowered too, making dangerous access practically impossible. I'd much rather pull the cable and then get to work fighting the fire.
Just paid for a rebuildable reserve tap (thanks Jon!), and black '67 only rubber knob. Choke/reserve cable only $24 new. I'll probably make the little bracket that goes under the gas tank to hold the end of the cable. Got the fuel lines safety wired too. I can't imagine the heartache that would go along with seeing years of work and piles of hard earned cash go up in flames. |

Here's a shot of the same bus a few years back at a local show. Apparently owned by a couple form Oregon that now live in North Idaho. Nice bus.

thats a shame. Have the three latest all been red? Major, can you detail out what you are doing so others can copy you? Anyone see the extinguisher featured ad? I guess it just uses all of the oxygen, so no fire, and it's what nascar uses...I dunno I seen nascars on fire for a while.
I'm taking delivery on a DC soon and I will be double checking everything before I drive it more than around the block _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Is it a common cause to the fires? Is there something specific that is prone to starting a fire and is there anything specific to be done to prevent. I saw mention of the gas line shut off... _________________ Pepper loves the Safaris! |

I think he's talking about installing a reserve on the tank. You can do it on any bus up to '67. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

it's almost always fuel line, fuel filter in the wrong spot, or the carb brass inlet popping out
Check and replace your fuel line regularly. I'm using the stock german braded cloth still, and the ethonal in modern gas eats it in about a year. The fuel filter belongs out of the engine compartment, I put them near the trans, and safety wire from the fuel line clamp at the inlet to the carb will keep it from pulling out. Everett says also, leave some room, dont butt the fuel line all the way upp the brass and next to the carb, give it some expansion room. makes sense _________________ Stop dead photo links! Fuel lines or the carb. inlet pipe coming out on the carbs.
Not a Type 3 but same idea:
Bad news - pipe comes out:
Examples of safety wired:
Also don't press the fuel line all the way against the carb. body.
Leave a little gap for expansion, otherwise things expand and the fuel line pulls the inlet out of the carb. body. |
