Is it advisable or possible to replace this exhaust flange? I see CSP has flanges for a type 1 which, assuming I can get the correct size, may work.
https://www.csp-shop.com/en/exhaust-heating/flanges-for-header-type-1-251-001-538c-22812c.html
The rest of the heat exchanger is fine, but I noticed some black soot at the edge of the flange to head connection (see photo) and there is clearly an exhaust leak here..

David, you might be better off talking to a machinist and see if they can take some material off to get the surface flat and square. You might want to do both sides, to keep things even.
Another alternative would be to use some ultra copper silicone on the gasket surfaces to seal them. Ultra copper silicone is a high temp silicone. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks Bob good suggestion! I'm trying to find a good machine shop but it's challenging here. _________________ Cheers, David

CB performance graphite compression gaskets work very well. they conform to bent flanges, or rough surfaces. |
I use those, as well.
The exhaust leak is more likely from the gasket than the flange.
I've never had much success with the metal "crush" gaskets, myself. _________________ 1988 Ford Festiva L

Thanks for the input all! I ordered a couple sets of the graphite gaskets from CB. Hopefully works. Would you all also use the Ultra copper with these or just install dry? _________________ Cheers, David

I've never used a sealant on exhaust gaskets.
The graphite gaskets are thick and soft enough to seal, even on rough flanges. _________________ 1988 Ford Festiva L

I use the Ultra Copper with the metal gaskets. The Ultra Copper seems to fill in the imperfections on the gasket surfaces. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

While I wait for parts to arrive, I did a bit of interior work.
Installed a starter relay which was very easy
Reinstalled the original sound proofing with new style underneath.
And decided to make a carpet set. Whilst there are kits available, the cost to get them shipped nearly tripled the price. I went to a local carpet supplier and found some very nice charcoal loop that was a near match to the original. For $35 I got enough material for the entire car.
Using the old carpet as a template
Finished side section
Full set done, took about 3 hours. The forward center piece was difficult. The template was the original rubber matting which is molded so it was tricky getting it right.
I will add a grey herringbone cloth binding to the exposed edges and post results. Here is a test fit pretty happy!

Nice work. You should be able to salvage those rubber grommets and what not for that over the top stock look if needed. I had to do similar to my 62 notch in order to get the look right.
What happened to the front molded rubber mat then? _________________

Does it clear the back seat? I forget just where the bottom cushion frame fits the body... anywhere near those wires or connectors?
That concern aside, and despite my natural dislike of starter relays for reliability reasons, if you ARE going to install one, THAT'S the place-- inside, away from the elements, not under the car where temps, water, and debris can loosen the connections. I'd solder/heat shrink those female crimp connectors, though. They are not usually gas-tight like the OEM crimps. Good you have it away from the battery vents, too... the gasses can corrode the connectors, too. |

Nice work on the carpet.
(and the starter relay - I'm a big fan of those)
You can get better results with doing your own carpet..
You would have been extra upset if you paid a ton to get one shipped,
And it was total crap!! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Thanks guys.
The rubber matts are tucked away safe in case I decide to use them again.
Pretty sure the relay sits low enough since its mounted to the rocker, and below battery level. But good point o double check! I did redo the connector with heat shrink....so frustrating when you forget to put it on before the connector 🙄🙄🙄
Clatter, yep read too many posts where sets from the most common suppliers arrived only to find grommets in the wrong place, bad fitment, etc...so why risk it when the alternative is cost effective, better quality carpet and a perfect fit!?
Getting closer to drive every day! _________________ Cheers, David

Extremely nice work on your own interior. I second being able to do your own as it's frustrating having a badly shaped and fitted piece. Good on you man. Its coming along and soon you'll be back on the road with a bigger grin! _________________ MonT3

Thanks Bob! Still have lots to do, but the goal is to have it all complete and ready for the May show in Hannover. The motor has been sitting on a pallet for quite awhile, so I’ll do the full “pre-start” process same as after the rebuild. I discovered cracks in the brand new Bowden tube, so waiting on that replacement part to arrive. Check your parts folks...new doesn’t mean good! In any case it’s a great feeling seeing it back where it belongs! _________________ Cheers, David

Tram and I have been saying that for years. You know things are messed up when the repop companies can't get the simple things right. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Oh my does that statement hold true. I have a story about new rear drums.
Ya they were new alright, not centric at all, or for the common folk out of round.
