Drivability Data Form: data collected of a vehicles road worthiness, and
general operating state.
Year: model year of vehicle, found on, registration or title. Also 10th digit of the Vin is the year. 1-9 = 1971-79. In 1980 they went to letters. A=1980 B=81 and so on.
Make: the vehicles manufacturer. Volkswagen.
Model: found on, registration, tile or script on vehicle. Beetle/Bus/Vanagon/Eurovan/Type 3/411/412/Ghia/Thing/Type 181.
VIN: found on, registration or title. On the earliest models this is the chassis number stamped on the chassis somewhere. On early models this is the 9 digit number after the words “Fahrgest. Nr (chassis number), on the identification plate. On later models it can be found on drivers side of dash, visible looking through the windshield from the outside, and on the driver’s door post.
Mileage: odometer reading.
Engine Type:
Type I&II upright cooling system. Looks like this
Type III is a Type I engine with pancake cooling system. Looks like this
Type IV flat engine/spin on oil filter. Looks like this
Wasserboxer (waterboxer) water cooled Vanagon motor. Looks like this
Carb: carburetor.
Mnf. Manufacturers name will be on the body of the carburetor.
Mdl. Model number will be on the body of carburetor.
FI.: fuel injection.
Mnf. Unless injection system was changed the manufacturer will be Bosch, they like to put their name and insignia on components.
Mdl. Model, two examples D-Jetronic/L-Jetronic.
Dash Lights: located in your instrument panel. They will light up when you turn the key to the run/first, position without starting the vehicle, for an explanation refer to you owner’s manual. Manuals can be found here.

Cranking: starter turning the crankshaft of (an internal combustion engine), typically to start the engine. Turning over the engine.
When Starting: turning the key to the start/second position to start the vehicle.
Will not start: cranks and cranks but does nothing, will not even try to start.
Will not start but tries: while cranking, engine tries to start but will not start.
Starts and dies: starts and runs for a short time but dies.
Starts normally: starts in the usual way.
Operating temps when difficult to start: takes longer than usual to start or cranks won’t start
Cold: first thing in the morning oil dipstick is cold to the touch.
Warm: after driving oil dipstick is warm to the touch.
Normal: after driving oil dipstick is hot to the touch but you can still hold it.
Hot: after driving oil dipstick is burning hot to the touch you cannot hold it without getting burnt.
When idling, my vehicle: a normal idle speed is between 600-900 rpm, refer to the owner’s manual for specifications.

Will not idle: dies immediately will not idle.
Idles rough: engine runs unevenly at idle; car may vibrate.
Idle hunt: drops below normal idle speed then returns to normal idle speed but does not go above normal.
Idle Surges: is when idle speed rises above normal idle speed and then drop to or below normal idle speed.
Idles too low: idle speed below vehicle specification.
Backfires: an explosion of prematurely ignited fuel or of unburned exhaust gases in an internal-combustion engine.
Idles too high: idle speed above vehicle specification.
Idles normally: idles speed at vehicle specification.
When driving, my vehicle: motoring down the road in your vehicle.

Hesitates: momentary lack of engine response as the throttle is opened gradually.
Stalls: engine stops running. Occurs most often at idle.
Has a fuel or gas odor: smells like gas/petro like when you are putting gas in your car.
Stalls when slowing or stopping: engine stops running. Occurs most often during deceleration.
Runs too hot: after driving oil dipstick is burning hot to the touch you cannot hold it without getting burnt.
Vibrates excessively: to move to and fro, especially rhythmically and rapidly.
Runs to cold: after driving oil dipstick is warm to the touch.
Lacks Power: more throttle is necessary than usual to arrive at or stay at a desired speed.
Misses: means that a car's engine skips over one of the processes of its combustion cycle.
Pings: a metallic rattle, imagine the ball bearing in a paint can being trapped in your cylinder.
Cuts Out: loses all power momentarily.
Stumbles: is felt as a sudden or momentary lack of power.
Smokes excessively: like a chimney smoking.
Black: smoke from the exhaust pipe that is thick and dark.
Blue: smoke from the exhaust pipe that is blue or bluish-gray and often oily looking.
White: smoke from the exhaust pipe that is white or looks like steam.

Grinds: grinding noise from transmission when you shift.
