Anybody have any feedback on this ss Vintage Speed 4 tip exhaust?

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=59205670080620...mp;theater

Looks and sounds decent from what I can tell. No indication of price on this model. Other versions look to be around $450 USD

Well as it's a prototype and was only posted last week there won't be any feedback yet Trevor but if it's anything like their other products it will be top quality.

The fit under the bumper looks good. Smile

Having heard about the quality of their other exhausts I hoped they would be doing this!

Making suggestions to companies like Vintage speed I think helps out too......I ran one of their header style exhausts on my bus out on the salt for 2011. I had to of course modify it to fit a 36hp, and the were good enough to sell me just the header as I made my own exhaust can. I suggested at the time that maybe they should think about some offerings for the 25/36hp market and it looks like they took it to heart with some of the early engine exhausts they now offer. The quality is excellent and well worth the price.

Anybody have experience with this supplier? Do they sell direct, or thru dealers. If dealers, who?
Specifically I'm interested in their "Abarth" muffler.
Their website shows:
Engine » , Exhaust and accessories » Abarth exhaust (p/n) 1053-10
Abarth exhaust, 25/30 hp
stainless steel
In stock? 12/04/2013

CIP1 has this part listed for $599.95. How do I know this? check their p/n: C21-1053-10. Same as the Belgian dealer. Not a coincidence, I'm thinking.
Question remains....Anybody have any experience with this "Abarth"?

Yes there's a whole separate topic about that one: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=375343

They are made by CSP Germany, stocked by:
CSP
Wolfsburg West
Flat4 Japan
BBT Belgium
CIP
...and probably more.

Some have found the tail pipes sit low under the bumper...see the other topic.

Please use the above topic for questions and comments for the CSP/WW Abarth Exhaust...this topic is for comments on the proposed Abarth repro by "Vintage Speed of Taiwan"

They sit way too low on the car.....way do they make the ABARTH pipes curved???? Only the pre 1956 ABARTH pipes had a slight downward slope to clear the bottom of the apron.

The correct post 1955 ABARTH was a straight styled muffler, all four pipes coming out straight from the muffler.

When will anyone get this right????

Have a friend who took off his Abarth, due the noise it creates inside the car.

They make two versions of their dual tip 36hp exhause; one for cars with cut outs and the other for cars without. I therefore expect that we'll see two versions of their 4 tip too......

Thanks

Well, it seems that ALL the repops (even the very ill fitting 4 tip muffler from FLAT 4 out of the 1990's) had the bent pipes.

No one has made the straight pipes for the cut outs yet, a true ABARTH copy.

The Belgian one has the bends, but not as radical as the Wolfsburg West one looks like it could be used on a lawnmover it's like 6 to 8 inches too low.

Looks horrible see below

Belgian one

This one is the closest to the original design, but I've heard from some vintage speed tuners that it suffers from backpressure issues and the seller takes months and months to ship the finished product?

CIP1 is supposed to have the Belgian one, but I'm thinking that they might be the German pipes, which also have a stupid bend in them.....

No one has truly made a ABARTH muffler from original drawings which I've also seen online, I'm surprised that no one has found any resposten/N.O.S. stocks of the originals in Italy, I but I don't think the ABARTH pipes sold well back in the old days, that's why they are so rare......

Ernst 4 tip Muffler

The German company Ernst also made 4 tip mufflers as well for 25 and 36HP cars, but they are as equally rare as an original ABARTH style pipe.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

See how straight the pipes are, the Ernst is a direct copy of the Italian ABARTH muffler.........

Finding original era photos with good shots of the pipes is very hard, this photo is from another Samba member Stale Air and shows his Mother together with the family's first VW that they were so proud of complete with the brand new accessory ABARTH muffler, note length and angle of pipes.

Please have a read at this thread, there's some repeated stuff there, but it gives you the idea of the current situation with the repro pipes/mufflers.

VS did a nice job with this dual tip. The tips exit straight out the bottom of the muffler and look to have 1-2" below the apron.

This is a 1980's reproduction Abrarth I've had for several years. I'm not sure who made it.

That I think is the ORIGINAL Flat 4 once made ca. 1985 or so?

I've been in touch with Vintage Speed, and they are taking orders now. They want to know several things:
"Do you need heat riser?"
"Does your beetle have tail pipe cutouts?"
They also indicate it takes four weeks to build.
The cost is $435 plus $98 shipping.

Check out p/n 155-201-05100 on their website (Type 1 engine High Performance Sport Muffler for 25HP, 36HP - $435 ea). You'll see that they ask the same questions for this twin tip muffler. And it's the same price.

Pretty clear that they just substitute the smaller quad tips for the bigger twin tips.

They also have SS j pipes and adapters.

Another cool feature I forgot to mention: This muffler has an oxygen sensor port built in. (Check out the full size image on their website) This is important if you use an air/fuel ratio gauge for getting the jetting dialed in.

PS to Burly: I know this Abarth style exhaust is not legal in Stone Stock.
I'll hang onto my old rusty twin pipe set-up just in case I ever need it again.

I'm just wondering at the video and thinking something doesn't look right to me. Those tailpipe pairs are way too close to eachother!

I saw them at the Bug In. If you want a replica these are not for you. Totally different look and construction. They do look good though.

In respect of the original posting of the Facebook Video, I posed a question to "Vintage Speed" about the positioning of the tail pipes...they have just replied...

Quote:
This is a proto type, not a real one for Beetle. Do not email me why the location of tail pipe is not correct. Thank you everyone.

On a positive note they have been made aware of people's concerns about this so I guess it's a wait and see issue.
