|
|
The previous owners did what they could to extend the life of this poor seat. Unfortunately, after 30 years of sitting with this duct tape on it, the glue residue is dried and firmly stuck to the caramel seat vinyl while the tape backing came off easily. I'm planning to do what I can to fix the seams, and have another caramel seat cover for parts(thanks Keith), but was wondering what I could use to clean the residue off the vinyl without damaging it more than the years of use did. Will something like GooGone lift the glue without damaging the 50+ year old vinyl?
Thanks!

I used this stuff to remove glue residue off an original seat cover I have about 1 year ago:
It worked very well but took a long time and a lot of detailed scrubbing time - it wasn't super strong. My can is probably 10 years old by now so maybe it's broken down a bit. I did not let it sit on the material very long either, mostly dabbed it on, scrubbed, and wiped it off. _________________ How to Post Photos

WD-40 works pretty well also. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

X2 and no worries on it eating the vinyl.
Also Goo Gone may be worth a try. |

I've used foo gone for years. It works great for this kind of stuff. If you try foo gone stay away from the stuff that comes in the spray bottle.
I'm shore the 3M stuff will work great as well. 3M makes the best of everything. _________________ Wanted Victoria motors licence plate frame.

I've used Spray Nine in the past to clean up interiors. It cleans vinyl nicely, but not sure about specifically duct tape residue. |

the primary ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil, works great for removing stains/residue, and is very kind to most surfaces... |

Spray with WD40, then cover with plastic food wrap and let it sit overnight. Scrub with stiff bristle nylon brush: Repeat. _________________ ____________________

WD-40 is petroleum based, and over time will dry out the vinyl which is also petroleum based. I would give Murphy's oil soap a try, it takes a long time but it'll remove just about anything and isn't expensive. I'm sure citrus based graffiti remover would also work and wouldn't have any ill effects. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:
