1988 Westie converted to R134 back in 2004
Things I have checked:
Fuses are good
There is power to the wiring in the closet.
System is properly charged.
Tried to check the switch itself but cant figure out how to get at it.
I am kinda hoping there is a list of usual suspects. Did some searching but have not found anything yet.
Anyone have any ideas? |

I just tried jumping the pressure switch on the off chance the fan was connected into all of that but no dice.
Also it does not look like my compressor is engaging. |

Time to get the Bentley manual out with your volt/ohm meter and work backwards from the fan leads. They will be in one of the connectors on the left rear pillar along with the rest of the AC wiring. _________________ Joe

I had a similar problem, the fan wouldn't turn on at all. Turns out the motor connections were corroded. Think about it....the front of the van gets all the nice rain & moisture pressure fed into the front grill. Disassemble every connector from the motor to the resistor & clean it. Then, jump the temp sensor connector plug & test. |

I took it to mean he was having a problem with the blower fan (in the rear with the evap).
If that is the case I would test the switch as that is the part that the fan (not running) and compressor (also not working) have in common. |

You make a strong case.
Does anyone know how to access that switch? I looks like it should just pop out but I cant seem to get it loose.
I sure hope I dont have to pull the dash to get at it. |

Still wrestling with this one.
No power to switch.
Clutch does engage when jumped to the alternator.
System is charged more or less.
Nothing comes on. |

I am sorry, but what is actually not working? Jumping the AC compressor clutch to power only tests the clutch is pulling in. There should be a switch to keep the compressor from turning on when it is low on freon. There is also a switch to cut the compressor off if the pressure is too high. Your subject is "Air Conditioning fan will not come on". Am I to assume that the interior blower does not blow when the AC is turned on? Does the radiator fan run on low when you turn the AC on? It should. The factory AC circuit on the Vanagon has a lot of points to check for power loss. There is no magic bullet. You need to determine where you are loosing power. As suggested a good manual and a test light are all you need. _________________ ☮️ |

As long as fuses are good and big red wire to alternator has power fans for evap should come on. My van is not charged ATM. Fans come on. My brothers van has no fan action currently. My next thing to check are the fuses behind left vent on dash... |
Fuses behind the left vent on dash?
You dont just mean the fuse panel right?
How do you access these? I have only checked the fuse panel under the steering wheel and the fuses behind the closet. |

Good god! How the heck do you keep all 4 tabs depressed long enough to remove the vent? |

Never have removed the vent to access the fuse panel. Isn't it easier to remove the mounting bolts for the fuse box and drop it down or am I miss understanding. To remove the vent you do one side at a time applying slight pressure from behind while you unclip the opposite two. _________________ ☮️ |

Your van has AC in the rear with relays etc. The clutch will not engage if the low pressure switch is active, and will also disengage if the pressure is too high.
That said, if the AC clutch won't engage with 12Volt fed to it directly, then your problem begins there. The fans should come on regardless if all is OK in the cabinet. I would start confirming that temp thermostat "switch" is working. _________________ Cheers,
