|

This is a shot of the engine bay from the '66 I bought recently. I have a couple of questions about the air cleaner.
1) is there a hose missing on the left ? There is an opening pointing downwards. Not sure where the other end of it would go though...
2) what is the purpose of that metal hook on the left? It seems to control airflow and can be locked in place below or above the seam of the air cleaner.
Thanks !

There is a pre-heat hose that should attach to the air cleaner and routes through the rear tin. The lever is attached to a door in the air cleaner to allow air from the engine compartment to enter the air cleaner so there is not a restriction. This is the general explanation. |

There were two configurations for '66 US Beetles, early and late. The change was made at VIN #116852850. So, depending on what your VIN is, go from there.
Here is an example of early...
And here is the later progressive refinement (Note: Also used on Non-USA '67-Single port 1300's)...

The hook should have a weight and a flap controlling the air/heat mix. I put my "hook" down in the summer and up in the winter. Piece of cake. There is hose like the other two said to put a little warm air up in there when its cold |
