I'm 16 and am looking at a bus that is for sale in my area it has some cancer on the bottom and some surface rust, it runs but needs work. It also needs signal light switch and a accelerater cable. they are asking $300 for it and another wrecked one for parts, but I think we might be able to get it for less. Is this a good buy or just a bad bus?

The '73 and the '71 have different engines (assuming both busses have their original engines), so you won't be able to cannibalize engine parts from one for the other...

It would be a great project for someone who's 16 and possibly couldn't afford much more. And, might I ad, whould love to learn about fixing them up. It gives a certian respect to it regardless of shape.

I would jump on that deal....although the 73 will be of little use. just about everything mechanical/front end are different. I do hope you buy the bus. I bought one on a whim about seven years ago and couldn't tell all the great stories and people that I have met through my buses. good luck

i think it would be a great bus, just because it would be agreat learning experience. if you have the space, get both busses and part out the '73 maybey you can fund the fixing of the 71 a little bit. I remember when i was sixteen and brought home my first bus it left me with great memories

Yea the 71 is a good year to start out on, most of it is simple to figure out, get a Bently book & a Clymer repair book too, this will help you alot, and of course-search the Samba files. Partig out the 73 is a good idea, if the engine is dead its worth at least 100$, if it runs well-300$ or more, these are north east prices, I don't know about Ok. prices. Good luck.

Sounds like a great way to start. Just remember, it's a $300 van. There will be a lot of work to do, but it'll all be worth it in experience.

Get yourself a John Muir Idiot book also.

if the engine runs well.buy it, fix it up enough to drive it safely.then keep you eye out for a nice bus needing a motor. Very Happy i know whers thers a 71 deluxe in great shape with a sunroof.the motors blown up.the guy willl sell it for 1500.00 with a motor he wants 2500 to 3000. something to think about. Think

When I was sixteen I had a good 73 bus and a 71 parts bus, Kinda funny. But yeah, I agree that you could sell parts off of the 73, to get some money back out of the deal. You could get some dough out of the engine and tranny from that 73.

Bought my Bus ( the one in the avatar ) when I was nineteen. I'm forty four now. My mom said at the time, " why are you spending $2,000.00 for an old car like that, it won't last." Visited last weekend. She doesn't say that any more.
