We finally bought a bus!
After an all-consuming search (you know - checking the classifieds multiple times every single day - email alerts - etc) that lasted 6 -7 months, we found EXACTLY what we were looking for: A DRY southern Californian late Bay Westy in outstanding condition - both cosmetically, and mechanically. Within minutes of the ad being posted up on TheSamba, we called the seller, sent a small deposit to hold her, and arranged flights to LA for a few days later. We flew down for the day, and bought her on the spot! We bought Marigold from her second caretaker, who had pampered her for about 35 years.
Sometimes the stars really do align - and they certainly did for us - here's why:
About 1 1/2 yrs ago Debbie had booked a trip to travel the California coast with her 2 kids during March Break (AKA 'Spring Break' for you Yanks!). They were going to rent a mid 70's Westy from VW Surfari, and drive from LA to the Bay Area and back. A few months ago I decided to go with them on this adventure.
AND THEN WE BOUGHT MARIGOLD!
We cancelled the bus reservation with VW Surfari, and arranged to keep Marigold in LA for a few weeks until we were to return for March Break. During that time, we had a few little things done to her: The top was resprayed, a new canvas/hemp tent installed, HD sway bars front and rear, and we bought a few spare items that we installed/replaced during our trip - H4 headlights, new turn signal lenses, new rear light lenses, retractable seat belts, and a new stool in the correct matching fabric.
Marigold is now home with us in Toronto, Ontario. She has her very own Facebook page - become friends with 'Marigold VW', and follow our adventures!

I love this picture. Can you spot the happy bus in the sea of boring lemmings?
Met a beautiful cousin at a gas bar outside of San Luis Obispo.
Cheers!!

A dog? Are you kidding me? We have a blended family of 5 kids. With the addition of Marigold, we are a modern-day Brady Bunch. Yup - 3 boys and 3 girls all under the age of 14. With the exception of our 37 year old new baby girl, Marigold. |

I like the color of that bus! Did some Beasty Boys wanna-be steal your emblem? _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

Congratulations on the great find! Yep, can't lose that one in a parking lot! Would very much like to spend some time in ours out in Big Sur some day. |

Thanks for the greetings, and the kind words.
To the observant ones out there - Marigold was missing her front emblem when we bought her. Either the PO kept it as a memento, or it was snatched by some hooligan 'Beasty Boy' wannnabes. We put a new one on mid-way through our trip. |
