Thanks Wildthings.

Clean each socket well with a pick or small screwdriver, hammer the tool into the socket, remove and clean again. Hammer in one more time and hope for the best. My choice is to buy a 4" or 6" long tool as it will interfere with the boot less than the shorter variety.
The Allens are 6mm as others have stated, while the triple square is an 8mm, IIRC. |

Napa sells that tool, by itself so you don't have to buy a set. I cannot recall the part number of the tool, but it is under $7. Also be wary that you might have allen socket screws installed, as were mine on several bugs/busses over the years. Just have both tools on hand. |

Wasted: When I asked for a triple square / XZN bit at Napa, they looked at me all bug-eyed. Same for the other FLAPS I tried.
I made due with my old bolts and a standard hex for a while, just tack one of these onto your next order. I'm pretty sure this one was an EMPI-branded tool, so meh, but it gets the job done.

After cleaning the bolt heads, I just put the 8mm triple square socket on my cordless impact driver to remove them. Give them a little love pat with a hammer to make sure the socket is well seated in the bolt head. That makes quick work out of it.
I like to use new bolts when I go to re-install, then I just use the impact driver to get them all started. Once all are started, I use my torque wrench to do the final tightening to the torque specifications. |

Some early bays came with 6mm 6-side (Allen) head bolts.
When ordering at NAPA, find the product on their website and give them the NAPA part number. They can order it in the morning and get it to you before closing time. Don't make the poor guys behind the counter actually look something up on their own!!

The long thin tool clears the boot much better than a short squat one used with an extension. |

From last July when I learned about this problem:
My local Napa store had the correct tool, house brand. Tool 2304 Serrated Wrench, 8mm @$6.69 ea.
I picked up my bus and it had a mixture of both Allen sockets and those in question. |
