For a 2.1L engine, does the vacuum hose to the brake power booster have a check valve in it?
Bentley shows one near the intake runners but their pic must be for a 1.9L engine (?) _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

I seem to recall there one being on my 2.1L, right after a short (like 1-2" long) hose off the intake. I can verify tomorrow, if no one else confirms by then. _________________ ~Kamz

Dug up an old photo, in case anyone else needs an image to reference. Red arrow is pointing to the check valve:
(Disregard the filth. This was taken shortly after buying the van and just before the engine got cleaned... probably for the first time in its life.) _________________ ~Kamz

Thanks - now I won't be searching in vain by the firewall...
Does it really need to be checked as per Bentley, or would a malfunction be obvious from some other behavior of the Van? _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

I think if you start the engine and run it for about a minute and then shut it off, depress the brake pedal a few times. You should have more resistance with each application of the pedal until there is no assist. That would indicate the valve is working and there are no other vacumn leaks. I think you get about 5 assisted applications with the engine off. Sort of a fail safe for long downhills if the engine quit. _________________ ☮️

I just check the brake booster function once in a while on start-up. If the check valve failed, there'd be no draw down on the brake pedal. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

And FWIW, my Bentley manual does not say to check the valve, it merely lists a procedure for checking the valve (i.e., "if you suspect it's faulty, here's how to check it"). _________________ ~Kamz

Is there a trick for getting the check valve on the brake booster line re-installed?
I'm doing a Bostig conversion on my 1989 Westfalia. Getting the valve re-installed seems...tricky! Too much heat and the plastic on the check valve body melts. Not enough heat and the nylon line isn't widening enough the accept the valve.
Right now, I placed the valve in the freezer. Will try to warm the line tomorrow by placing under the escaping steam from the kettle.
Does anyone else have other tips I am unaware of? WD-40?? Dishwasher soap??
Any help appreciated.
