Unfortunately the back half got hacked -........... But I have a piece of roof left..... |
LOL, how big a piece? |
I am actually giong to hang on to the piece of roof. I can use a nice section of it for my rear engine cover. I am one of those folks that tries to get a much out of any material as possible. |
Ohh, you miss understood, I really did just want to know how big a piece it was. I am not looking for any roof sections for myself.. I was just curious. I think it's great when someone can use everything and not have any waste or at least minimize it.. |

I used to help my Dad on remodelling projects when I was young. He taught me early on that if you buy the material properly and layout your cuts well, you have minimal waste. Plus he grew up in the Depression - so you use EVERYTHING. Hell, when they used to butcher, about the only thing that didnt end up in the pot was the moo or squeal.
It makes me half sick when I see how much waste a lot of people have. Not that I hoard stuff - but anything of a reasonable size gets sorted and saved.
So - this carries over to the cars. With all the metal fab I have done so far, I have maybe a mik crate of scrap and even a lot of that ends up being gussets or something. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Nope - been tied up - adding on to my car storage garage (a third time) and helping a buddy who bought a property to create a "motorsports" complex. Was an old motel that essentially had been neglected for 20 years and its trashed.
Hoping to get back to the car in another week or two. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

in regards to your shroud popping into the coffin area, why not source a puma shroud for it? iirc, they are about 2 or 3 inches shorter than standard doghouse shrouds...
just a thought, carry on _________________ Brother's 56 Thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=652839 |

Thanks for the suggestion - had already investigated that. There is still a possibility that this may all be a non-issue. I fabbed the support structure really low and its very possible that I may bring the box floor up a couple inches once I start mocking the box up. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Finally some progress and I am asshole deep in aligators with a 78 vert that I am trying to get roadworthy.
No pics (forgot my camera) but the rear cab corners are pretty much done. We laid out the location for the rear cab window on posterboard and should have that cut out in the next day or two. Then just screw the panel in place and fab some bracing and the lower part of the rear panel that straddles the tunnel, but thats pretty much worked out. Then after test fitting the doors to make sure nothing got tweaked, it can be welded up.
So I should have the vert out of my work bay by the end of next week and should be bringing the hearse back home for some final support structures. Then time to build the box! _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Throw some type 3 tins on it, and you will have all kinds of room. |

LOL! Getting Verts roadworthy can be like getting old lobster boats from Maine shipworthy. |

Actually the vert isnt too bad - one of those "I felt sorry for the guy and decided to help him out". I should hopefully only have another 20 hours into it and it should be good. Damn, I hate cleaning up someone elses hack jobs.... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Keep forgetting to bring the camera to the shop. Will try to remember next week - I promise....And the vert came out pretty well - they owner is happy. Only pisser is the its got a stock centermount carb and no providions to connect heat risers yet (FI exhaust) - will deal with that on round 2 in a couple months.
In the meantime, taking the woodie to a few shows and always take my notebook for the hearse with me - I get a lot of design work done and its always cool seeing how some folks do different things. I am big on borrowing good ideas. Came up with some really good ventilation ideas after looking at a cool street rodded pickup.
Heres a mock up of the rear window. No - its not really that big. The weatherstrip shrinks the hole down almost an inch in each dimension. Visible glass will only be about 11X23
