Quick update - will post some pics in a couple days once I get a panel installed that I screwed up.
Been working on sheet metal for the engine compartment and "inner fenders". Realized that this is the best time to wire the rear of the car. What I then do is splice the harnes at the rear of the cab.
Something that changed things was that I am going to do a "gag" coffin which will have sound and light effects and possible animation. Will be on a remote, so I can give some folks a charge at a show or halloween parade. But I can swap out the coffin with a "normal" one easily.
Now, since I am doing that and may play with the effects a bit, the concern is that I will kill the battery. A buddy suggested a dual battery setup and I went that route. Of course I cant keep things simple, and I decided to add a 4 fuse sub panel and a couple relays to isolate the batterys. Just got the last part I needed today, so I should have this phase of it done in a couple days.
I also need to make the car "drivable" since I have to move it up to my storage garage a couple times to make room for 2 other project I need to get done over the next couple weeks. Not hard to do, but just sucks up time.
Thank God I pretty much retired a couple years ago - between family, the cars and a motorsporst complex that I am helping a friend put together, I wouldn't have time to work.... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

The car moves under its own power now. The inner fenders, engine compartment metal and the wiring for the rear is pretty much done. Tested all the circuits and everything works. Batteries charge - the whole shooting match seems good.
This is a shot of the ductwork and dual 5" fans for aux cooling. 6" flex pipe will go to the space between the cab and the box to draw in clean fresh air. There will be a curved sheet metal engine cover that will get hidden by the coffin
1/2 of the dual battery set up.

Got sidetracked - decided to upgrade alternator since the voltage was a little low for my dual Odyessey AGM batteries. Also threw one of the new Empi 34 PICT carbs on that I got swapping some parts. Am actually imperssed with it. Looks well made and tuned well. Also installed a mex SVDA instead of the cheapy SVDA that I was testing.
Figured its better to get everything dialed in and fixed first. Did some test driving as well. But now seeing an oil leak - Gonna drop the engine - most likely crank seal. Sometimes I do well and sometimes not. Hopefully going to get the actual tool this weekend and get it fixed over the weekend.
Then Monday or Tuesday helping my cabinetmaker buddy move some stuff out of the space that car is giong to occupy for the next couple months and take it over (another reason to fix the leak - he doesnt like puddles on his floor). Should start mocking things up later in the week. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

And after runing it a bit - had a bit of a leak - dropped the enging and turns out the O ring in the flywheel was toast - I had already messed one up and replaced it. So looking for why - already deburred the end of the crank, Did it again and polished the flywheel. When putting it back together, I notice that the aluminum gasket that goes over the crank end might be the culprit.
Made a quick call - turns out I dont need the gasket - cool. Throw it back together new main seal installed with my new home made seal tool. Was starting to get pretty warm outside though and the sun is beating down on my back. But gonna get this done. Anyway - real fight getting the engine back in - even with my wifes help. Went to rotate the crank a little - wont budge. Son of a bitch. Leaving out the gasket now brought the flywheel in 0.010" Went through my stash of shims. - No way to get what I need from what I had. Took about 0.040" off the OD of the gasket and put it back together. Dry as a bone. Now I am ready - The plan is to take it tothe wood shop Saturday evening - then get started on Monday. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Wellllllll - FINALLY getting to work on it. Been tied up with other projects - lots of good and cool stuff, just not on this car. The plan for tomorrow is to mock up the hearse body and get a handle on the general dimensions of the box - in particular the width. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

And now everything has changed. The concept was a "tweener" design - between the 20's style and the mid 30's style, but the hearse box was going to pertty much be that - a box.
Well when mocking up, my cohort in crime, Jeff the cabinet maker, starts sketching on a scrap of cardboard. Tapered the top in at the beltline. Looked like a "Brubaker Box" to me and I hated it. BUT the more we tweaked and explored how the trim, rails and posts would be done, it makes more sense.
If you see the initial concept sketch atthe beginning of this thread, the problem is that the area from the beltline up has too much sticking out from the back of teh cab. Has that "box truck" look. If taperred in, the mass goes away. But now that changes everything - woodwork needs to be simpler and cleaner. Its gonna work really well, but now taking a different direction.
Anytime you are doing something radical - looking at drawings is one thing - but stepping back and looking at it full scale from various angles is a whole nother thing.....Thats why car manufacturers do/did full size clays. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Cool project, I'm not all into the "hearse phenomenon" like some are, but I think the project as it sits would make a great stake bed truck look. _________________ 70 Street Baja http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=566113

The guy that is helping me do the hearse box had suggested that more than once (stake bed). And then we'd make a bunch of wooden casks.
But not what the wife wants. Whats kind of funny is that I could almost have "interchangable" rear bodies since it will litterally slip on from the top. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

About my 4th post will help you understand what I am doing. Dont have a good sketch - think curio cabinet (curved glass) - But you will have about 8" of flat on each side (running vertically). Below the beltline is a curved metal engine cover with stock license plate light from about a 65 bug. Has same radius as a stock engine lid. The glass doors above it match the curve and thats how you put the coffin in.
I think that I had said a little bit ago that the basic box has evolved since we mocked it up. Had issue with the areas just behind the cab being too much like a "box van" and so its going to get a little closer to a sedan delivery than originally planned. Havent really got anything done on it lately, but since the snow is flying here, I can start to concentrate on it again. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Finally getting back to work on it. Now that we have mocked things up, I know where my mounting points are. Ordered some more square tubing and am picking it up in the morning. Hoping to get the bottom framework finished this week. Then after the holidays get started on the wood. We have the MDO ordered that will be used for the bulk of it. Since the exterior is all to be painted, I don't need the wood grain.
Will be just using 1/4" veneered plywood for the inside of the box. Still up in the air on what we are using, but probably something simple like mahogany. Understated, elegant and traditional. But will use something more exotic for the coffin itself.
Once we get the box layed out (beltline and roofline in particular), I can get the cab body back to the body shop to get finished up.
Will post some pics later this week. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.
