How do they cancel on the 74 and earlier busses? I know it's different from the later ones.

On the later ones there is a cancelling ring with a tab that hangs down and wears from age failing to cancel the signal.

I think that there is a ring in the steering wheel which manually cancels the signals by hitting a switch in the signal switch.

So where would I get a cancelling ring? Would the dealer have something like that?

Just an observation, with the dual turnsignal/wiper combination switches on the '73 and later buses, the assembly has a tendency to creep down if the clamping screws loosen. The clearance between the steering wheel lower edge and the switch assemblies should be about 1/16". Any more than that and the cancelling ring will miss the little self-cancel tit on the switch.

Could ya'll post some instructions for fixing the turn signals? I have a 79 transporter, are the signals susposed to cancel on mine? I was under the impression that they weren't :-/

79BayCruiser,

Take off the steering wheel. Use a 22mm socket, offset box wrench etc otherwise be careful not to strip the nut with a crescent wrench.

Underneath you'll find a black ring like this. On the bottom of it is a plastic tab that wears out and fails to cancel the turn signal. This is what happens in 95% of cases. If it's worn either get a new ring or one in better condition. As a workaround you can wrap the tab with electrical tape a couple of times which will fatten it up and get the turn signals cancelling again.

Try this first.

Here is another turn signal related question.
Are botht the left and right interior signal lights on the dash supposed to go on when you signal for a turn.

Thanks
