Here's my vote: http://www.kennedyenginc.com Go to "Porsche clutches", and at the very bottom of the page there is a 180mm that I believe will fill the bill. Planning to put my money where my mouth is... |

For me it depends on the HP and use of the vehicle.
The stock clutch is good for normal driving up to ~90hp.
If you like popping the clutch go with a stock disk and Stage 1 Kennady Pressure Plate |

really? stock is good for 90hp??
I must say I am surprised... will be running a charger on a 1500cc 36hp case.
until that is built the same charger will be on my 1200cc, I estimate about 55hp
so, considering the extra torque... do you think the stock clutch will be good enough? |

The stock 211 bus clutch will hold up to 90 If driven with respect. Not the 113 clutch. Im sure I could slip a 113 bug pressure plate with 45hp. The new chinese 211 pressure plates are strong but very grabby compared to a 211 f&s. If I remember right the 113 holds 900lbs and the 211 holds 1100lbs.Ive used the 211 on a 1641 85hp engine for years but it was never used in a drag race launch. _________________ 2010 Bonneville record holder Type 2, 36hp

I'm getting old, 90 hp for a stock 200mm clutch...
For a 180mm use the stock disc with a Kennedy Stage 1 pressure plate if you are between 50 and 90 hp

does not work in a 36 split gearbox without changing alot with the lever arm. and this is a about 220nm clutch.
i recomand a porsche 356 180mm 9 spring. or changing the flywheel to 200 mm und use a typ1 200 std.
i had a stock dirk and a 9 spring in my superchargend 36. at the end with over 80 hp and about 170nm. i loved that pressure plate.
and hp is not what a clutch make slit its torque...and i made a stpock and new 36hp clutch and disk slit with only 0,5 bar of boost. maybe about 100-110nm.

The 9 spring versions show up in the classifieds from time to time.
I purchased a 6 spring pressure plate from WW several years ago, but sold it and purchased a diaphram style pressure plate instead (they're much easier on the foot).
BTW, how much stiffer is the Kennedy than a stock PP? Many years ago I installed a regular Kennedy PP on an engine. The pedal assembly was already very worn, and the heavy duty clutch sent it over the edge. I would like to avoid repeating that situation.

If you can afford the upgrade to a larger clutch, sure, go for it. But it's really not needed in most cases for a mild 36hp (stroker or not) that everyone seems to be building at the moment. I base that opinion largely on what I have run so far. I've had no slippage with just the plain ol' generic 180mm clutch kit. I do balance it along with the flywheel, but other than that it's straight out of the box. With the stroker engine I ran in my bus, no problems. Anybody who saw it run can attest to the fact that it hooked up really good. Remember, a bus is a good bit heavier than a beetle. I've said it once and I'll say again, don't over think your 36hp build. You don't have to re-invent the wheel to make it work good and be reliable. _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

lol... I am not over thinking! All I am doing is bolting on an AMR300 charger, straight onto the carb manifold, and sticking the carb on top of that....
thanks for the advice though, much appreciated. I think maybe I will just shove a stage 1 sumfink or other in there and see what happens.

I do have a 9 spring 180mm pressure plate and a NOS clutch disk fitted, but it doesn't hold.
like the 2nd from left, 9spring type
However I bought it second hand. it looks very good but hey... it is used. Is it possible to rebuild these plates with new springs?
Or should I replace it with a 211 bus clutch and will do the job as well? Currently run 58hp at flywheel with my 1192cc 36hp WW okrasa unit but will upgrade to 1448cc with zenith NDIX. So maybe 65-70hp?
I am not a big fan of the kennedy pressure plate as I heard you need a lot of force to operate the pedal, and the wife also wants to drive the beetle.
kind regards,

How about this. From what I read about Houseman clutches, they were used in Formula Vs and early 356 engines:
