Anybody seen one of these know how it works. I know its not the best.
A friend of mine was on a parts hunting trip found it pretty cheap I told him to bring it to me. Looks like a piece might be missing that holds the barrel looking feed speed thingy.

I really would like to try and use it but hoping somebody knows how that drum feed thing hooks up. Me and one of my friends was looking at it again this morning and come up with an idea we will try. I will let ya know how it works out.

it's a gear reduction unit, aka studderchuck, used for many things incluing guide work. use a drill on it to relive a lot of strain & slow down the cutting bits. or it may be for the feed so it slows down the feed so it dosent try to thread the case, thats probably how that one works, to push or pull the boring bar through the case.
if the screw has 16 threads per inch the case will have the same where it is bored(and that dont work), but if the gear reduction unit is used it will slow down the feed but keep it constaint for a good finish&size. the reduction unit would be conected to the bar& the threaded end would be bolted to some stationary part so it could pull or push. the drill would attach top the other end of the boring bar, not the reduction unit it's self.

Ok sorta like we was thinking. This old case is warped can see day light between case halves I am testing it on. I will try to fabricate some mount for the "studder Chuck" Monday see what it doe's... Thanks man.

It looks something like mine. It looked like the type I have used a large rubber band to hold it as the bar was being feed But I just hold it with my hand.

Is that one of those Yellow Jacket bars? I used to have one looked like it about 15 years ago. Hada mainliner but sold it ...big mistake.
OK cool thanks. My bar coming from the round thing not as long but there is a threaded stud coming from out the back of the plate that bolts to the case . I guess a bar attached to that .I give it a shot making one tomorrow.
Much thanks for the photo.

Wow, that is an unbelievable antique VW tool!!! I love how the front mount goes on the oil pump as well, the whole thing looks really sturdy. Pretty nice that you got the measuring tool as well, so you can spec out your cutters when you reset from 20/40/60. Very very cool!! Cool

What else did your friend find??

From what I have found out about - All State Machine -
They were a machine shop that supplied special tools for VW engine repair.
Located at 209 N. Cherokee Muskogee, Oklahoma 74401
They made 2 types of line bore tool for vw engines
The LB-1 same as pictured above
And the LB-2 an economy version with smaller trans end face plate
They also made other tools like head fly cutter, 6v - 12v starter bush removal and install tool, crank seal install tool, bench mount engine stand, gear shift fork adjuster tool, ball joint pressing tools, crank and flywheel drill jig tool, third wheel caster for when the tans is out of the car, valve seat puller,
crankshaft gear puller, cutter kits for valve guide boss, clutch cable greasing tool, pneumatic valve guide remover, valve guide drift tool, case stud insert tool

Must have been a large in business back in the 70's as they had there own alloy casting foundry and also because the LB-1 sold for only $399.00
I Have few sheets of paper with a tool list and prices from All State Machine and hand written in the top corner was "price increase will go into effect august 1 1974" so can only guess they still manufactured tools till at least 1975
Nice looking tools for air cooled vw's too wish I could find out more info about them

So if anyone ever reads this and has any more info about All State Machine I would like to hear from them

Another thing I have noticed is that my All state Machine LB-1 is a little different from the above pictures also
The "dog leg" casting as its referred to in the instruction sheet is a little different from the one in the above pictures
The above one has a flange that uses the oil pump studs and the one I have actually fits into the oil pump hole itself and then uses washers on two of the studs to clamp it into the oil pump hole

SWEET! Mic tool too? NIce!!

try it out and see how it cuts.

Best way to test it is to make the bits undersize. Run the bar once and boregauge the bores. You can then see how the bits are cutting. The bores should be nice and clean.

Good find.

Yeah the All state machine guys thought of everything back in the day
If you bought the LB-1 kit it came with the tool cutter mic setting tool as well as the thrust cutter bar with cutter and thrust cutter gauge
And there was even two options of thrust cutter gauge
A feeler gauge type and a micrometer adjustment type
