while im waiting on parts i started on the engine. compression check showed 123 #1 127 #2 85 #3 and 120 #4. yep apart she goes. found a stock build 1600 dp for sale locally after talkin with the owner found out motor only has 700 miles on a fresh build after market case. the guy who built it didnt tighten the flywheel bolts an well you can guess the rest so after 300$ home it goes. tear it down and its beautiful other than the crank crisp clean cross hatching, stock pistons , jugs , and heads so just a direct swap over to my tired engine and away we go. this is my first time ever working on vw aircooled engine so this makes it easy.

i even got lucky and while examining a parts car at a little side of the road junky car lot found these sitting in the front floor boards of a rotted 75 super.
an original set of kadrons. guy didnt know what they were or care so 40$ and they were mine. they were attached to sp intakes so ordered a new set of dp and the linkage from kaddy shack along with rebuild kits for total of about 130. (anyone interested in the single ports? they were cut in the middle and a hose ran between but maybe someone may want them anyway) |

looking good so far, did you measure before cutting off the frame head?
and another thing is the floors, 90% seem to come with the wrong style seat pedestal, as seen here
I had to remove the bracket and re-weld it on the new pan(bottom of my original pedestal was pretty bad)
can't wait to see more _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12

this is my first resto and any major body work on anything so i have a note book full of measurements so far. check each one three times before i write it down. but i know with aftermarket parts and such not everything is gonna come together perfect but hopefully close. and yes the pedestals are wrong they are alomst half an inch lower than the originals. i plan on installing different seat and will be making my own mounts so not to big a deal. |

storming most of the day so i figured id would play with some paint.
grabbed a tin and cleaned it up a bit
a quick shot of primer
and some paint
i know it doesnt look perfect but i was just playing around and it wont be a show car . but after the second coat it did come out a bit better than the pics on here. color was oil rubbed bronze similar to hammered paint . any thoughts? |

Wow- lots of hidden sins. Lloyd actually looked quite presentable in your first photo. But good score with the fresh 1600 engine.
KEEP THOSE SP KADRON MANIFOLDS! They are hard to find, even with the drilled holes you mention. Just look at the asking prices in theSamba classifieds... Might be worthwhile to trade them for something you need.
Measure your front axle mount section many times before you align and weld it. The entire wheel alignment and vehicle tracking will depend on a totally accurate positioning and thorough welding.
In what section of PA are you located? |

finally had a break in the weather so i was able to get the new frame head welded on. started with a row of plug welds then after I rechecked all the measurements I welded the ends.
as u can see above I hammered it out and was able to get the original contour for the clutch housingto match fairly well.
add a plate on the bottom to fill in a gap from cutting.
and all measurements are with a 32nd to a 16th of the original.

I added por15 to the inside of the tunnel before i attached the new head and fuel lines. hopefully tomorrow or thursday I can clean up the welds a bit then start welding in the floor pans. ( side note I was using a 125$ flux core mig welder from the local farm center nothing special and it definately leaves alot to be desired but it does the job although not the prettiest welds they are sound). after the pans are in i will por15 the frame. |
