Would a convertible decklid fit on a regular 63 beetle? I put a 2110 engine into my beetle and was looking for ways to get air in there without having to use standoffs. I thought maybe a convertible decklid with louvers would help. Any suggestions? |

It should fit just fine all things being equal, provided the decklid latch will fit the catch on the apron. The only differences in the decklids are the vents and the rain trays.
From '58 - 63 with the T-handle latches, any should work fine, but, from '64-'66 with the square push button latch you'll need a little catch that you can attach to the apron. _________________ Not enough car seats fit into my:

I think you will have to take off the rain tray if you have duel carbs |

I don't know if Bill May still sells them, but I bought one from him a few years ago. It wasn't as "finished" looking as this one, but a lot less expensive. |

Yes a convertible decklid is a direct swap providing its a compatible year. In your case, 58-63. 64 would fit but be incorrect. I went to a 64 vert lid on my 64 w/ 1776- dual Kads. I am running the raintray but had to go with smaller aircleaners. Tray will not fit with many dual carb aircleaners and typical high set hex linkage, but you'd still get the added airflow just be aware of water on your motor. |

You could run an earlier W decklid as well. If you're interested I can help you get one with or without rain trays.

There is nothing holding the deck lid closed except the spring at the top.Does it swing open a little when you start out. |

Tennis ball works well. Don't think my decklid is bouncing much and temps have dropped. After an hour drive even the T handle was very hot forget about holding the dipstick for long. Haven't been on a long drive yet but went about 20 minutes yesterday without tennis ball measured 196 degrees. Same 20 minutes today measured 182. |

Will a '58-'63 popes nose fit on these? I'm thinking about doing this on my '62 but the cost of early popes nose is making the cost of this conversion too high. _________________ Brett

A "pope's nose" will fit an early W (split era) decklid- as it should. However if you are referring to a '58-'63 license light- it will not. A "pope's nose" light comes to a rigid point at the top- matching the peak of the center of the decklid- and has curved, convex underside (hence the nickname). Besides, a later light on an early decklid is a travesty- and your friend count will plummet. _________________

As noted, a "Pope's Nose" light is specific to split era cars, although the decks are similar, the mounting is different which is completely different from the '58-early '64 lids. For your application, you should use the 56/57 lid. The proper license plate light would be from a late '52-'57. Wolfsburg West makes a good repro for about $25 or you can find them easily on the Samba Classifieds.

Thanks for the info. I've always wanted a vert W lid. I may even make an aluminum copy of it after I master the aluminum fenders. _________________ Brett

I put a 62 convertible deckid on my 62 and it worked just fine, but mine has just the stock engine/carb on there. As mentioned the rain tray might have issues with different carbs.
And for the early T-handle style decklid, I've just used a sping clamp or two, attached at the bottom as and easy temporary bottom-standoff:
And the people taking about the "Pope's Nose" - they beat me to it, that's a term that annoys me as well and I would have mentioned it too - the license light they talk about is one that actually resembles a nose if you look at it from the side, and the 58-63 really do not in comparison:
