I haven't really ever wanted to light a Jiffy lube on fire before I tried removing the transmission fill plug. I took heat to it, a chisel to it, and finally an extractor to it. So now all I have is a mangled fill plug stuck in the trans.

The transmission is about ready to come out, I just need to get that 8mm 12 point tool for the axles. Is there anything else I should change before I put it back together? I already have the oil seal for the input shaft, clutch has about 20k on it. the car has 258k miles so anything that's easy enough I will do.

At least the previous owner gave me receipts so I wouldn't be blaming him for the 4000ftlb torque on the fill plug.

I have had 100% success removing fill plugs with the Snap On 17mm plug wrench.

I have to agree that many shops over tighten these for no good reason. I've been using teflon tape for years. Lower torque, no leaks, easy removal.

Ar those still available new? (haven't checked the classified ads here yet).

Check the oil slinger on the input shaft before you put the new seal in. If its loose, now is the time to fix it.

There is a great thread on it with a step by step repair. The search should turn it up.

Oh, yeah and tack weld the nuts on the bottom of the clutch slave bracket. It will make it a lot easier removing and replacing the clutch slave.

Always a good idea to tell us what trans/vehicle we are talking about - year, etc. There will be different recommendations if you have a manual trans vs the automatic trans.

Are you pulling the trans just for the fill plug issue? If so, I'd recommend before you do that take it to a welder who can weld something stout onto the plug, such as a large bolt so you can get it out. $20 well spent.

You can always just weld be piece of bar stock to the drain plug. The heat alone might make it unscrew easily.

Leftover mercedes SL lug bolt, misc VW lug nut. Weld would have been better if I bothered removing some of the chrome.

Works great

X2 on modifying the clutch slave bracket.

1985 1.9l manual.

I already pulled it. The plug is mangled up pretty badly so I'm going to let professionals take care of it. I already busted a welded up bolt for a tool, I didn't try welding something to the plug. The plug no longer has any semblance of it's former self.

In the middle of me removing the transmission (solo, that was difficult in a gravel driveway) I found a coolant hose without a clamp...Now I just need to get the fuel line changed out. I need to get the van back together to go get some tires I ordered put on.

I'll be happy when this is all over. Then it's time to enjoy it until it explodes....then bye bye wbx.

I am concerned about the strain I put the engine through, I didn't support it before lowering the transmission. I got a hockey stick and ratchet strap holding it up now.

i got a set of big allen sockets for 10$ from
princess auto
if you are canadian
princess auto is the place for you
cheap prices
they take will take back any mangled tool

with a 17mm i think and a breaker bar easy as pie

also if you are taking transmission off
maybee leave fill plug alone
and turn upside down to fill via drain plug as its out !
just do a precision fill
also when you do the oil slinger you can clean the magnetic plug at that time
just a thought

Yea I thought about that, I even thought about tapping my extractor hole and putting a plug in that. But I think a decent machine shop can make it good as new for a decent price.
