|
|
A casing like you would have for a bicycle cable goes through the throttle wire tube in my 1959 double door panel. It sticks out a few inches at the front and the rear, and I can see the end of the wire flush with the end. I want to pull out the casing and it will not budge. What the heck is a casing doing in there, anyway. Help!! _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Somebody had issues with the metal tubing so they RESLEAVED it with the bicycle crap. Id bet this bicycle shit is hung up on the very same part of the tube that has its issues. Good luck getting that one out. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

I do not get much more than three hours of sleep per night and then I try to work on the bus at night. Mistake. I found another tube that goes up to near the gas pedal assembly that has nothing in it. At the rear, it fooled me because the crud blocking the end of the tube looked just like the end of the casing. The tube that I first looked at did have a casing sticking out of it.
Thanks for the reply. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Up to about 1961 VW used a wacky paper clip device bolted to the transaxle nose to keep the accelerator cable from cutting into the transaxle case.
Later VW switched to a boden tube like cable cover to do this.
The other tube you found is probably for the fuel tank reserve tap/switch.

The choke cable is found in a bicycle style cable inside the factory tube as well. When did they quit doing that on Buses?? My old 59 Bug had one. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Good point! 1960 was last year for the manual choke being standard. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I was thinking that it was for the choke, too. I had noticed that there is a little hole on the angled side of the floor. I wonder how people ever replaced the choke wire and casing? Mine is like it is glued in the metal tube. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

My '59 DD Panel has a reserve fuel cable and a choke cable with the sleeve material and a hard wire. I tried pulling both out to refurbish and they would not budge. On another note, I sleeved the throttle tube with bicycle brake cable sheath and use the braided throttle cable. Makes for a smooth throttle operation and you get about three times the cable life. Since it is a smaller diameter than the VW sheath in the choke and reserve tubes, it pulls out easily. _________________ I'm at the age were "fuck off", "fuck you", and "fuck it" answer most questions. |

That seems like a good idea. I guess that you had to use the cable casing that did not have a plastic liner in it, or did you because the cable was thin enough? What did you do to hold the casing in the tube? _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

I just used a short piece of fuel line on each end. It holds tension on the cable sheath pretty good. You could also put a fuel line clamp as added security.
My sheath had the inner plastic liner. The briaded throttle cable fits perfectly. My throttle action is buttery smooth. I learned this trick from Chris Jansons at the Volkstop here in Tucson. _________________ I'm at the age were "fuck off", "fuck you", and "fuck it" answer most questions. |

ya, if they sit for years they get rusted inside the tube.
Just buy a new one, it comes with a new sheath. toss the old one rusted in the tube. Remove the new cable from the new tube, and apply grease or anti- seize, put it back in the tube before installing it in the bus.
That makes it easier to push/ pull, and less likely to rust.
They sell a one size fits all cable/sheath.
You will have to cut the sheath and the cable to length. |

Where can you buy a braided cable for split bus? |

Can't really tell. They don't give you length or application, |

Not a fan of the braided cables, only because they fray when you cut them to fit. Then you wrestle with them if you ever need to remove/reinstall. _________________ Kevin Albrecht

Plus they do a better job at sawing thru parts. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
