I recently purchased a 57' and it's missing the battery strap. Can someone please share a photo of a stock strap? Also, should I have a cover over the battery?
Thanks in advance, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, the photo helps. I see that the strap gets bolted down on one side, does the other end hook to something on the pan? |

That battery cover will not fit many of the 6 volt batteries that are now available. Many are too big for the cover. I have heard that the Interstate battery L19?? fits the stock cover. Perhaps someone can confirm this. Regardless, it is a good idea to have the battery secured by a strap and take precautions that the seat springs do not contact the battery terminals. _________________ 1960 beetle

Here is a photo of the part which is welded to the floorpan which receives the strap. Easily fabricated if you don't have one.

This is what the cover looks like. Dimensions are 8 5/8 inches by 6 7/8 inches. Measure your battery and compare.

Thanks a lot Snort and Wayne1230, your photos are very helpful. My battery is a 12V and appears to be larger than a stock 6V. Ill measure when I get home. That's a really nice cover by the way. |

That is a nice cover
Can anyone tell me if the battery cover & strap are the same as that one for a '53 Oval? |

They are different: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=349877&highlight=battery+cover _________________ It all works on paper.

In this case, you are somewhat on your own. 12V VW models had a different hook on the floorpan which fit into the case of the battery, and a clamp on back side which attaches to the same stud as the battery cover used for 6V. Floor pan shape was slightly changed in later years to hold the larger battery, and the positive terminal has a plastic clip-on cover over it... no battery cover. You might find more ideas on how to do a clean install in the 58-67 forum just due to the higher volume of topics posted there and the floor pans between an Oval and the later 6V cars are close enough to being the same that most of it would apply. Actually, if you have no hook on your floorpan it's probably already been replaced or spot repaired with later sheet metal so there you go. |

Those two piece straps are for later Bugs that have trim panels under the seat frame. You want the single piece strap that goes from the floor up, over the battery and back down to the floor. |

Thanks for the help. There are few sizes of battery cover/cover, at least 2 sizes of 6v.

Would the strap suit both sizes? There will be various battery's height as well.
Looking at my battery, the strap will need to be 7 1/2"(H) + 6 1/2"(W) x 7 1/2"(H) = 21 1/2" to hold down my battery. |

The width of those covers are all the same or at least similar enough to not cause any strap length problems. Height variation should be adjustable by the nut on the stud at the rear of the battery. I'm not aware of any different strap lengths available. Possibly some were made for special applications such as fire trucks or other? |
