I see that Wolfsburg West sells a replacement in-dash speaker for the Beetle. Is there anything special about that speaker (ie. mount points?), or is it something I can just go down to Radio Shack and purchase?

I think I have read that if you get the wrong speaker, you can damage the old stock radios because of the difference in impedance, as measured in ohms.
I have also read concerns that the speaker that WW sells has that flaw, and could potentially harm an old radio.

I had to replace the original dealer installed motorola speaker years ago and found one speaker at Radio Shack that fit almost right- the mounting holes did not quite align until I buggered with them and added washers to hold it in.
As I stood there with the old speaker checking out the limited stock by lining up mounting holes the sales guy was trying to up sell me on a better sound system. He finally quit talking when I asked him what he had compatible for a 6V car with a stock AM radio.
I believe Radio Shack has discontinued the one that fits _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

You can get a proper speaker from turnswitch.com.
I got a 6" speaker from them and used an adapter to install it place of the normal 4". The adapters are available on the classifieds.
It works well with my sapphire II radio in my 1963. _________________ Paul

I replaced mine, and I was lucky enough to find a speaker that fit out of a not so old home stereo. I am not positive, but when I was researching on the subject of speakers, and I found that my sapphire I radio specified a 6 ohm speaker according to the schematic. The speaker that I replaced it with is an 8 ohm speaker, and seems to have no ill effects, besides not exactly lining up with the stock screw holes. I doubt you cold find a 6 ohm speaker in the original size. |

You can find places to rebuild and/or recone the original speakers. Check any automotive magazine like Hemmings. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Thanks guys. I'm hooking it up to an old Blaupunkt Radio that I want to install. Here's a picture of it being bench tested tonight:
I hooked it up the headphones in the picture. Worked great!
I'm a bit worried about using the WW speaker now, but then again, why would they sell a "stock replacement" speaker for "Oct'52-1970 Beetles" that would potentially damage the old stock radios? Maybe I'll put in a call to them to find out more about their speaker. _________________ '66 Beetle Project & My 1983.5 SVX Powered Vanagon Westfalia

I ordered a replacement speaker from Turnswitch. Service was top notch. I believe it was an 8 ohm speaker. I picked up an adapter in the Samba classifieds. It was larger than the original size that did not use the adapter and the sound seemed better considering a low power 53 year old AM radio.

Thanks again guys. I ended up buying the $9 stock replacement speaker from WW. It works great actually (good enough for my needs anyway).
There's no speaker in the car now, and I don't have mounting bolts. I'm guessing I need to remove the front grill and just use regular bolts/nuts/washers to mount it in there? Anything special I need to do?

You should be able to access the mounting from inside the trunk. You got to go in there anyways to remove the speaker grill xP |

Now I am a bit worried. My wife got me the retrosound dual voice coil speaker for Christmas, and it is a 4 ohm speaker. I will be putting in a sapphire I am radio, which I planned on attaching a 6 volt redirad unit to for listening to an apple device. The retrosound website says to use the speaker only for radios designed to handle 4 to 8 ohms...? Am I going to ruin my radio? _________________ Plate of shrimp |

Hopefully you've solved this, but Yes, our dual voice coil R-65N can be wired either in 4 ohms ( one coil per channel -- left to one, right to the other) --- or for a mono original radio, see your owner's manual for the diagram on wiring the coils in series so your mono radio sees an 8 ohm load! Thanks, Michael Robbins ( www.retrosoundusa.com ) --- need more questions answered? email us at [email protected] and thanks to you all for helping us be the "go to " radio company for your VW needs, the Samba member group has been wonderful to our company over the years!
