Hi Yall,
Ugh! 1984 TinTopper here with the Yakima 1A towers, 2" Risers, MegaWarrior. So there are tons of Brackets to mount the ARB from DIY, to GoWesty to ARB Brackets. What would yall recommend afa no-drill brackets to mount my ARB Awning?
Cheers,
RC

What's wrong with the ARB brackets? Is it the bracket or the bars that you don't want to drill holes into?

Get the ARB rack mounts. They fit my Thule rack perfect and are bomb proof. Easy install just clamp them to your rack cross bars to hold them still, and pilot drill, drill to size and bolt 8mm through bolts. Then drill second hole and repeat. The brackets are like 30 bucks on amazon.

I have the 66" crossbars so the way Tim has his mounted might not work on the inside of the silver tower that is around the bar. So the angle of the awning might hit the crossbar. If I mount the bracket on the outside of the silver tower clamp, then rain will come down between the awning and the van. Hmmm! I do like the ARB brackets because what you mention that they are bomb proof. Hmmm! I could cut the crossbars maybe. Still thinking and engineering. Ugh!

If you don't want to cut the bars down. You can loosen the bars and slide them over towards the drivers side and then tighten them up again.

I bought a set of 66" bars and cut them down to 58", as my original set were already that length.

Sorry if this is already covered in the thread or elsewhere. I didn't feel like reading 20+ pages to find the info.

Is there any way to partially deploy an ARB? 8 feet was one of the draws whenI bought it, but on a recent trip it was too much for the campsite we were in.

I haven’t tried it but it seems like you could just unroll in part way. The two aluminum side struts telescope.

But the legs aare at the ends. You have to unfurl all the way tp get to them.

Maybe you could somehow gather the cloth after deploying the legs?

Go to page 21 and it shows you how they took a 3rd leg to rig something up.

You unroll it, drop the legs, roll it back to the length you want (with the legs swinging wild in big circles on the ends). Then put them down and set the side telescoping bars.

(this is a guess of how it might be done) Wink

If you removed the leg pivot bolts and replaced with pins it might be more feasible. I'm still guessing here....I should probably go out to the van and look at my ARB....but one of you sunny-climate fellas who use your awnings year round can do it, right?

^^Going from memory, seems like the little holes the telescoping legs go into would get buried when you rolled it back up.

From my research the GoWesty brackets will work with all rain gutters.

I chose to run 3x brackets for my 2500 size awning without drilling. It is on there pretty tight. I thought about doing the riv nuts but decided to try it without. I am happy with how it is.

I'm very sure these will have been mentioned before, http://www.north-westy.com/store2/arb-brackets-vanagon-specific
I've seen a lot of vans with the ARB awning, a lot use the GW option, a lot of those I see the powder coat cracking, and the mild steel brackets rusting.
I bought the north westy brackets, non magnetic stainless steel brackets, I don't think they be rusting anytime soon.
My only gripe as far as the ARB awning is concerned, they do not offer a 10' version.

I contacted northwesty and they said their brackets will not work with the "C" shaped gutter lip.

The GoWesty brackets are now Stainless steel

Which year vans have the " C " gutter lip, Lucy is an '85, they are on there and fit just fine, I wonder why they do not do an alternate option.

My 83.5 had the "c" gutter lip. Looks like Lucy was one of the first new style starting in 85.

Thank you, I learned something new today, and I can see why maybe there is not the other option, being a lot less of a potential need for them.

Funny that they would state this on the product description then "Fits all years and gutter types 1980 through 1991"?? I've had these brackets on my '90 Westy for two years now, no rust as of yet...

The GoWesty does work with all year. However the North Westy ones don't. But yes it is misleading.

However - and this is maybe how/why they keep the description - I called Van Cafe asking about their brackets. They said their bracket would work, but I would need to cut out the "C" part of the lip where the brackets will go. No thanks to that.

So yeah, pre 85, buy GoWesty. 85+ you have options. Buy Gowesty has their logo etched onto the bracket which is kinda cool IMO.
