Thanks for the reply but its the other way around. I am removing the flex plate and installing a flywheel. |
Same deal. Ideally they would interchange, but that is why there are quite a few shim combinations. On a used engine, I'd want to maintain the endplay, not tighten it up if it is close to spec. Assuming it was setup correctly prior if the endplay is out of spec, something is wearing out and overshimming, could aggravate the problem. |
This is very important. A lot of Type 1 engines have been killed by people trying to tighten up the end play on an old engine. If the endplay was once correct you can not change the shims to reduce it or you risk locking the crank to the thrust bearing. The WBXer engines don't have as much problem with excessive end play as the Type 1 engines, but you still need to think twice about trying to reduce endplay on a used engine. |
X3.
the reason to adjust endplay is because you've added new bearings or altered the case/crank somehow. boston bob was finishing up a rebuild, not just throwing some shims in.
the reason to measure it is to let you know how much life is left in those bearings. if it is getting sloppy, then you may need a full rebuild and replacement of the main bearings.
mine was cracked: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=589769&highlight= _________________ 84 Vanagon Westy, 1.9L, California raised but defected to Canada. |

Well I guess it's all moot what I've asked. I've spent hours trying to lineup this transmission. I couldnt get this thing back in if my life depended on it. Something is hanging up and no matter what I do it just will not budge. |

Did you try slipping the disc onto the tranny input shaft before bolting clutch to the flywheel? Assuming the disc will fit onto the shaft and that the disc is aligned properly with the pilot bearing then the tranny and engine should mate up readily once you get them well aligned with each other. Did you try rotating the engine (tranny in gear, P. brake on) while applying moderate force to mate the tranny and engine? |

The big diameter endplay shim is still available in Europe. I was not able to find any in North America last year. |
Question about endplay:
On a 1.9L how much is to much? (Would this require the large shims)
Is .005-.006 too much?
How do you fix endplay in a 1.9L?
Anyone have a recommended mill/drill for engine machine work?
I am looking at a 1.9L to turn into a oxyboxer. _________________ 84 Retro-Westy GW 2.2L (Vincent)

Spec is .003-.005
According to well-circulated video, on a run-in (not rebuilt) engine, guru Bob Donaldson (RIP) always aimed for
.005 endplay. Outside of that spec, adjust by selecting a different assortment of shims to give the desired result;
check and double-check everything dry (no oil) with no seal or o-ring in place which would skew results.
Unfortunately, "new" shim packs are unavailable but they <occasionally> come up in classifieds or private sellers online.
Keep your eyes peeled, or maybe we'll hear from some van hoarder/builder out there with some parts to spare...???
Oh yeah...and tell us more about this "O2-boxer" rebuild...???
Good luck...keep us posted!

You want three shims, not one or two. |

There ya go then...
Sorry if I misspoke - when I did my tranny work in 2012 they were NLA.
Happy to say my endplay was still within spec at the time.
Still, I wouldn't tighten it up too much. Keep it closer to .005 than .003.

Does anyone have a valid link to Boston Bob's flywheel video. I cannot find it anywhere and all the links that are posted do not seem to work. _________________ 1983.5 Aussan Brown Westfalia | 2016 to 2020
