I know that the first 3 digits of the VIN on these buses correspond to:
2 = Type 2 (duh)
2, 3, 6, whatever = body style (transporter, pickup, panel van, etc.)
2, 3, 6, whatever = last digit of the model year

For 9 digit VINs, the last digit of the model year indicates 196?-1969 I think.
For 10 digit VINs, the fourth digit is a 2, and the last digit of the model year indicates 1970-1979.

At least I think that is correct. But that's all background...

My real question is for the remaining digits of the VIN, which are the serial number for the bus. For example, I had a 1973 Westy with the VIN
2332000009
meaning it was serial number 9 for the 1973 model year. (I named it Number Nine, and it was a mighty fine Westy, now living in the Toronto area).

Are serial numbers unique, and are they serial in that they run independently of the first digits?

That is, if in 1976 VW had several consecutive buses built but of different models, would the serial numbers look something like this?

2262000123 (this would be a transporter)
2262000124 (another transporter)
2362000125 (a camper)
2362000126 (another camper)
2662000127 (a pickup)
2662000128 (another pickup)
2262000129 (yet another transporter)

If that is the case, then if one had the master production list, then one could go back and determine the model just from the serial number and model year, correct?

And there would never be a pickup and a transporter (for example) with the same serial numbers, even though they would have different VINs.

Is that how it works?
