Yep!....Quicker on the day than four of the 911's, couple of Lotus Cortina's and a 7 litre Galaxie. |

that motor sounds great. if you could get rid of some understeer you would be right up front. |

The understeer is just cold tires. Once they are up to temperature the car is pretty well balanced...Not a lot of grip though with skinny Historic crossply tires 120mm fronts and 135mm rears! |

Could you post some pictures of the out side of your car? I'm running a Beetle in vintage racing and just wondering if you have any aero devices on your car. Your steering seem very stable at 100 MPH as opposed to mine.
Thanks! |

Hi
No aero devices allowed so the cars stability is all down to the suspension setup. If you look at all 1960's, 1970's rear engined road racers (Porsches, Renault Alpines, Fiat Abarths etc) the rear end is always lower than the front. Rear engined cars must have more aerodynamic lift on the front than the rear (this is one reason why Porsche 911's have such large rear spoilers and the same reason why VW raised the Beetles front ride height by an inch or so in the late 60's, early 70's)
Set the rear end an inch or so lower than the front and you should see a difference on the straights AND in the corners.
Good luck!
Ian

Ian:
Whats up with the motor? And what brakes are you running?
Cool cars, gotta love them.
Thanks

CSP disc brakes all round with fast road pads. The brakes kept locking up when I tried using race pads as the skinny historic tires don't have enough grip to cope with the braking power.
The engine is fine, the stuttering in the corners is tire shake!!
I'm pushing the car so hard now that I'll need to start adding better bracing on the gearbox. I've also been told to replace the rear body rubber mounts (in front of the rear dampers) with metal spacers as this should stop the rear torsion housings from flexing. |

Main intrest in engine, size, carbs ect. You might consider one of the offroad type transmission strap kit like Bugpack list, their part number
6522. Look on the Bugpack or any offroad supplier for something similar.
to help with the tranny flexing.
Does the car feel stable at top speed? The sedans always wanted to fly around.
Thanks

The Beetle is really stable and doesn't slide or twitch around anything like as bad as the Lotus Cortinas and Hillman Imps that I'm up against. If you notice on that lap, i'm going through bends at up to 83-99mph without any drama.
Car Spec: 1965 swing axle Beetle, CSP disc brakes all round, 1285cc, 44 Webers, Engle FK10 cam, reworked stock heads with stock sized valves, cooling by 12 inch electric fan and ram air pipes, approx 120-125bhp@ 8000rpm. Bears close ratio gearbox with a Quaife ATB diff, Dunlop historic crossply tyres, weight around 740kg with driver. Front suspension: Stock beam, springs and rubber bushes, adjustable Formula Vee anti-roll bar, 2.5" dropped spindles, Quantum double adjustable motorsport dampers. Rear suspension: Stock springs and rubber bushes, lowered 2 splines, custom made heavy duty adjustable Z-bar, Quantum double adjustable motorsport dampers. |

Thanks for the pictures. The car looks awesome!
Are you using any caster shims up front? How many pairs are you using? |

I believe its 9.5: or 10:1 and it currently runs on regular 101 octane supermarket fuel...nothing fancy.
May try some Sunoco fuel at some point but it must be designated 'pump gas' to be legal for the racing, so there won't be any noticeable HP gains...may run cooler though. |

I believe there is only one set because the front is barely 1 inch lower than stock. the rear is probably only 2 to 2.5 inches lower than stock.
Lowering your swing axle Beetle to the floor won't make it handle any better...It's a 1550lb car with a fairly low centre of gravity, so you can get away with plenty of suspension travel and quite a soft setup. As an example my front suspension moves by 4 or 5 inches (watch the front end when I brake hard) |

Ian:
Please keep updating the thread with pics and details. Reminds me when some guys got together and ran a 71 or 72 Super Beetle in the Old
Trans-Am Series here in the States. They went so fast , bent the front
hood in and helped with the aero. |
