I have done the same thing, and it transmits alot more vibration into the cab. Urethane is almost solid. Not at all like rubber. If you do one mount, you might as well do them all, because a few rubbers and one urethane does not mix well.
Having said that. Theres nothing better than some stiff ass urethane mounts for holding your engine where its supposed to be. |

Just wanted to confirm that this is a solution.
Finally got the engine in and have put about 40 miles on.
Shifting is noticeably better and there is no extra noise being transferred through the mount. Because of the engine rebuild it is actually quiet inside the bus now. _________________ '75 Westfalia Camper FI 1.8L

I thought about just filling in the gaps with the poly but I couldn't be sure it got where I needed it. The stuff is thick and without vacuum or pressure casting techniques I couldn't be sure of not trapping air pockets.
This formula, by the option I bought, is softer that what I am used to for poly mounts and bushings. It has complete set now and is still flexible, it is a little bit stiffer than the OE rubber but not by much. I can squeeze the left over between my fingers and distort it, not something I can do with the poly performance bushing I have purchased for various other projects.
I am feeling pretty good about this being a real front mount option. _________________ '75 Westfalia Camper FI 1.8L

Nice tutorial. I bet you can make all sorts of stuff with that poly. I know I'm fed up with breaking rear engine mounts on my '72! Now, how does it perform when installed? How flexible and how strong is it compared to rubber and the regular polyurethane VW aftermarket bushings?
Dare I say, wouldn't it have been easier to just fill the space with poly? |

Forgot to include this photo. It's how I set the shaft to be centered in the rig before I cut out the rubber center. The all thread clamps the top shut in addition to setting the height of the mount carrier. The height of the U-shaft ends are set by resting on the slides of the drill press vise. Markings on the aluminum sides and top plates from the mockup with the original rubber square it all up. The punched L-channel is just to give the left side all thread something to rest on.

The 60A formula was designated as softer for daily driver. The play was putting stress on the shift shaft causing it to leak from the nose cone seal and an occasional noise transfer that vibrated the whole shaft.
In case anyone is looking I pick up the polyurethane from an independent Energy Suspension dealer.

Hi Chris - you might want to keep your eyes open for a good used original to throw in your goody box. Front trans mount is now checked off the list of things to do\buy before the engine can go back in. It will be fully cured in a week.

When I pulled the engine I noticed the front trans mount had significant vertical play. I decided to make my own polyurethane mount.
