Someone is selling a set of stock spindles and king pins and are advertising them as "1953 - 1960". But spindles available from Wolfsburg West are advertised as fitting anything pre-1965. Is there a difference in spindles between 1953-1960 and 1962? _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

The only difference I've noted is that pre 61s have 10mm grease fittings, where as lates have 8mm _________________ www.vdubengineering.com

So does the commonly available grease gun come with 8mm fittings? Just wondering if I would have to get another grease gun if I got these spindles, if they have 10mm fittings. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

The nipple is the same size just a different size hole they screw into
IIRC the 60 and earlier used 10 shims per link pin and the 61 and later used 8 per with an o ring and dust shield with a nub that fit into a notch either in the carrier or the arms (to long since I seen one to remember ) |

Dont confuse Spindle/Knuckle and Link Pin Carrier (Torsion Arm Link)..
The spindles are the same but the shim stack and trailing arms changed in 1960. Thats when the shim count change occured.
The grease fitting in the Torsion Arm Link changed thread size as well in I beleive 1960.
(For USA Link Pins)
53-59 =10 shims
60-65 = 8 shims, oring and shield.
60-65 trailing arms also have a groove and slot for the oring to be captured.
The Carriers/Links are interchangeable and from what I've found. Use simply the shim stack based on the trailing arm design its being used on.
So its again a question of how original or how not... _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}
