Tizian,

Nice picture of your Deluxe on that lake.

I did a trip in a 15 window across Canada in January 1978, Night time temperatures reached -40C on the prairies (about the same in Fahrenheit). We had to be pull-started by tow trucks each morning on that trip.

-40 is exactly where F and C cross over. I have seen those temps, and it is not fun. But at least the sun is shining.

Some photos from our trip down to Buses Nowhere Near the Arch (BNNTA) and back.

We drove just over 1200 miles including an overnight stop at Rock Creek State Park in Iowa on the way down and on the way back, and a trip into Hannibal to visit the Big River Steampunk Festival.

BNNTA is a must attend event for any bus lovers!

Rock Creek State Park (we were the smallest RV there Very Happy )

I have told this to many people, most do not believe it. They have just never seen temperatures that low.

I'm sure it's not just me- isn't there something about driving a bus that's just super cool- maybe like piloting a plane- kind of hunched over but strangely comfortable- I don't know how to explain it- but unique to a bus- that makes it so great to take on a long road trip...? Something that no other vehicle can provide? Man I love my bus.

Very slippery when you don’t have spikes on your tires. Stay in the middle of the road, otherwise you will slip off...

One day I decided to drive to the Russian border on my own. Got stuck in the snow in the middle of nowhere. I tried all kinds of things to free her. Finally I succeeded kneeing besides her one hand on the clutch the other rocking her back and forth. Don’t want to imagine what would have happened if I did’nt made it - Scheisse! Probably some Russian bear would have had me for breakfast.

Some crazy Finns Very Happy were organizing a trip to the North Cap in February every two years for a while.

http://www.jupeviihde.fi/northcape2006_english.html

Oh, it doesn't feel that cold, because the air is very dry. I've been to Oulu many times and also in winter.

It hit a low of -23 in Richfield Utah when we had the 56 westy on a road trip in 2007. The bus shuddered and shook when I started it up in the morning, I had to sit there with my foot on the clutch a few minutes.
I suddenly understood why there were sump heaters.

It was warmer when this pic was taken:

We did camp in the bus after that, with normal freezing temps.
It did not get above freezing for the next 1000 miles, but it did warm up enough to snow maybe 60 miles from home. Very Happy

I love that Eberspacher

Did I mention the Eberspacher? The bus was really drafty then, we taped up the roof hatch with 2" blue painters tape. Ditto for the rear hatch and pop out windows.

Now the rust is fixed and the bus has good seals, so it is warmer in cold weather. But I don't think I've driven a bus in anything below 20F since.

It was very dry and felt very cold.
The bus started every time on that trip, 6V 1600. It shortly afterwards developed a hot start problem.

I drove my '50 bus on a little 2500 mile jaunt down to California, up and down the coast and to a few VW shows. Carrie Joined me for a good bit of the trip, opting to fly in for the most scenic stretches. So far this year, she has put down over 1500 miles in the passenger seat of sudfunk, about 700 of those miles on this trip. I got to drive the long desert stretches all by myself.

Totally forgot about this thread! Shocked

San Diego to Saint Augustine, to Key West, to Tampa, to Nashville, to Ft. Worth, to Santa Fe, to Phoenix and back to San Diego, 7000 miles in 5 weeks. Cool

Thanks.

That is the Morgan hotel in San Simeon, California. It is a nicer place than we normally stay, but since the Hearst Castle is closed for the pandemic, the rates were reasonable.

I don't know. It is at the junction of state highway 360 and US-95 in Nevada. It is hella dry desert around there, and there is no agriculture anywhere near it, so I would think it was for mining, but that is just a guess. When I saw the industrial look with all the graffiti, I just had to stop for some photos. The HotVWs feature for sudfunk has graffiti backgrounds from "freak alley" in my town. The bus likes such settings.

Its fun watching that place change over the years. I have a few more pics of different buses in front of it. I'll try to find them. The mango pic was from 2005 if I remember right. I have driven eight different split buses through that town over the last few decades, and all were on trips of over 1000 miles, since I live in the middle of nowhere, and almost every road trip ends up being over 1000 miles.
