PostPosted: Sat Jun 01, 2013 1:01 pm    Post subject: Lost low speed on radiator fan Reply with quote

I just finished my coolant system R&R and noticed my radiator fan was occasionally a bit noisy during the bleeding process. I tightend a few things up (plastic wind deflectors and the tabs that hold the AC condensor to the rad) and the noise appears to have ceased.

BUT, now I only have the highest speed of my fan. When I jumper the 3 fan switch wires I don't get the low speed. Low speed doesn't come on with the AC either. This all worked fine prior to the coolant system work that I just completed.

The rad fan fuse is good. According to GoWesty's article, my fan is a one speed unit with relays and a resistor used to operate at the lower 2 speeds. Does it seem likely that one of these things just happened to go bad and how do I test each of them?

Thanks

This will bump your post. I believe the 91 had an external resistor by the l/f head light behind the grill that controlled the speeds. On factory air models the radiator was actually a 3 speed fan. The resistors do go bad. I used one from a eurovan on ours. Long story. I'd want to check further with a test light or volt meter and the Bentley before I condemed a part or worse ordered the wrong one.

F-it. I'm punting this one on over to the mechanic. Between the loss of low speed fan, still noisy (only when hot) fan, and what I suspect is a stubborn air bubble around the t-stat... I'd rather pay someone to fix it all while I'm at work instead of burn another weekend.

I'll post what I find out.

easy to check resistor and cheap to replace. sounds like it's the issue based on symptoms. See this thread, second post, for the quick test. Or at leas have the mechanic do it.
