PostPosted: Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:57 am    Post subject: Addco 719 Bushing Slop - HELP Reply with quote

I'm rebuilding my entire front end and have the Addco 719 large diameter front sway bar. My van is a 1985 that originally came with two mounting holes and bracket for the body bushings. As you can see from the picture there is a TON of slop between the bushing, bar and body. It appears to me that the bend in the body doesn't work well with the Addco bushing and bracket.

Had anyone else had this problem? How critical is this slop? Does most of the energy transfer between end links or do the body bushings play a critical role?

I'm going to contact Addco also but I'd appreciate any input.

Scott

I don't see why you couldn't make a steel/nylon/white oak shim to fit in behind the bushing and tighten all that up but I'd be calling Chris at T3 technique to get a Powerflex body bushing.

The fit on those is perfect. Wink

At the time of installation PowerFlex didn't make a front 7/8 sway bar bushing. I have an email in to him to see if that has changed.

I'm guessing that the 1986 and newer vans have their body mounts slightly rearward allowing the bushing and bracket to sit flush to the body instead of the slight angle I have in my 1985.

Thanks

Scott

What is your impression of the sway bars so far. ? in comparison to the original sway bars?

Awesome! Body roll significantly reduced. Semi-Truck shutter while driving behind reduced.

A used genuine bushing would probably fit just right. Breakers yard?

Not sure a OEM small diameter bushing would fit a 7/8 inch bar.

As I recall (its been a while), I either modified the bracket, or redrilled the mount points so the bushing would be tight on the body.

I'll check and take a picture for you.

Thanks FT... that is the conclusion I was leaning toward. I'd love to see a photo if you have the time.

PostPosted: Mon Jun 03, 2013 9:30 am    Post subject: T3 Technique Reply with quote

Here is a reply I got from Chris at T3 Technique

"Yes, this is an issue with the Addco products. You have the early style sway bar mounts and Addco does not make a bushing for that application. Neither does Powerflex or Whiteline. I have toyed with the idea of machining a set of the Whiteline bushings to fit".

I'm a bit pissed that Addco markets these for all Vanagon models.

Can you bend the tab a little more so it sits flat? seems like that would tighten it up a little bit. Then shim what's left of the slop.

I contacted ADDCO - they shipped out some beefier mounts with polyurethane bushings.

They do have a lifetime warranty on all their products.
