So this weekend, as I struggled to find the constant vacuum leak on my FI bay (looks like its the brake booster), my friend, who was helping me at the time asked why I didnt just buy an early westy with an upright motor, since I was "clearly too stupid to work on these". What a friend. So I sez to him, if your so smart, find me a cheap one, and Ill buy it right now. (This would prove to be the undoing of my wallet from its contents. I should learn to not shoot my mouth off when Im frustrated too.)
So I start cleaning up, and I notice two things. He has a smug look and has loaded four spare tires and my tow bar in the time it took me to to pick up my tools and wash my hands.
Thinking I know better, I followed his directions, which were basically, ten miles to a pasture, through a cattle gate, across two pastures, and behind a row of cedar trees. I drove out, turned left behind the tree row, and:
Well Ill be dammed.
Shortly after, his buddy joined us, and quoted me a price that made it impossible to leave without it. Luckily for me, he brought a chainsaw. Down comes the cedar trees. I sorta named it Zeder, which is french for Cedar, but I dunno if that name will stick. Maybe Zed for short. I like that.
So after a brief period of heavy chainsaw action, Its almost ready to come out. (Like my fancy blue transmission strap? Yup.
Getting the trusty red truck lined up for the extraction...
Not sure what these were, but they were heavy as all hell, and I had to move them one by one onto a trailer for him to scrap out. They left a rust line all down the body here. Im hoping it comes off.

So, I get it out and take a look at it. Its not flawless, due mostly in part to its life in the trees, but its pretty straight. Some light rust in the rockers, and a non creased nose dent. I think I can pop that with the football trick, btw. Battery trays are not rusted out either, however, the passenger one contained a suprise for me, a big ole heater. Appears complete too. (did I ever mention these freak me the heck out? I dont know if Ill keep it in place, but I probably wont be using it if I do.)
The interior is suprisingly intact, and I scored with a non mangled engine lid. The plastic early bay sink is trashed however. Anyone know if the metal one from the same era drops right in on the same cabinet?
I did score a rare, but not that rare tissue holder!
Anywhoo, we got all the wheels changed to my rollers. This is my buddy jerry wondering why Im taking photos when hes changing tires. A valid question. So I help.
Up on my rollers, we say goodbye to where the bus has been for the last 15 years.
Editors note: He SAYS 15 years, but the last tags are '81. Hmm.

Back out on the concrete for the first time in 15 (or so) years, and straight to a carwash.
I got it cleaned up and into the yard next to its younger brother. Its beat, not very pretty, but complete. Brakes still work, has keys and title. Barely any rust. I think Im ahead of the game for what I paid, and tinkering on a type1 powered bay will be a nice change.
Thanks for reading, more to come and soon I hope, as I mothballed all my Type4 powered projects for now.

Nice save! Good to see another early Bay resurrected. And man do I ever love my Type 1 engine. Toothbrushed it clean the other night.
I think you saw my thread the other evening. I'll be watching this one, look forward to seeing what you do with it.
Best of luck on the build. _________________ Godspeed

Thanks! It wont ever be as nice as yours, but Im hoping it will clean up into a very usable camper that I can enjoy. Im disappointed about the little rusty areas, but Im excited about having it. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN
