I made new axle tubes for my RGB omit on my '67 bus. Now the bell ends are new. I am just wondering what kind of pre-load should be on the axle tube once the retainer is bolted up. Should the axle just flop around or should there be some resistance to movement (like a feeler gauge feels, or stiffer, like a new tie rod end feels).

Thanks, Gordo.

Should be slightly firm, but free.... Preload adjusted by number of gaskets under flange plate...

So, holding the axle end casting up then letting it drop....
A. a direct free fall with a clunk
B. a smooth fall to it extreme with a gentle tick
C. holds in place but will move down easily with help
D. need help from a buddy to hold the other side of the trans

????

I'm thinking B, but it is a new axle tube and it may need to ease in awhile in which case a possible C.

Gordo.

got it. It is easier to judge the preload by twisting the axle tube, rather than using an up and down motion.
Four gasket papers seamed to do the trick.
