PostPosted: Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:12 pm    Post subject: Speedometer not registering speed Reply with quote

Has anyone experienced their speedometer not registering speed when driving but still registering mileage on the odometer? Mine seems to have gotten stuck at 30 MPH and won't move at all.

I checked the cable behind the gauge and it's on ok. Also the cable at the other end it in the correct spot. Any other places I need to look at?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

the needle probably needs some oil/grease, the odometer runs on gears, the speedo runs off a magnet. Either way it's gotta be opened up to fix it.
The middle section is the speedo drive, above the odometer

thanks for responding gents.
Blankmange, I don't think the needle is bent or stuck as it was functional yesterday when I was driving the car. It could be binding as the needle tries moves barely a half inch from where it is.

W1K1 thanks for the info and pic, I'll open it up and have a look. Wanted to clean the grey ring maybe it's a good a time as any. Will post findings.

Thanks!

I took the speedo apart and cleaned out some of the old grease in there. Found what looked like a small piece of paper or something to that effect. I applied some new grease and put it back together but noticed the needle didn't move as freely as before and as a result, I broke the back end of the needle. Was Brittle, no worries as I have very bad looking speedo I'll remove the needle from and glue on this one.

Is the needle supposed to be bent like this one?

There's the piece of paper next to the dirty Q-tip

I cleaned the area around the cup as well as the small point where the pin-like needle goes

I need to pull the other speedo and glue the need on.
- I've put the speedo piece back together, not moving as freely. Do I have the two pieces on there too tight? Is the needle suppose to move freely?

The luck...Pulled the other speedo out of a bin and took the bezel ring off and it's cracked... Mad I guess this will be on hold until tomorrow night. More to follow.

Seems when I put the cover back on, the dial no longer spins freely. I re-seated the cover several times and each instance I had the same results. The next day I was able to pull another speedo and cleaned it up and am using it in the interim until I can find out why it's binding. Do I have the cover (The piece that holds the round magnet) on too tight?

I never went that far with mine. I just removed all the caked on crap on the gears and greased them again it was fine. No more howling.

I think it's hosed but I want to try once more. I was able to get a cable and shortened it so I could drill test these guages when I come across them. If my next try fails, then I think I'll scrap it.
