Hello Samba! I have owned my 1970 Squareback for a little over a year now and have decided to start a build thread. A little background on the car; Well the previous owner I bought it from had bought it some time in the late 70's and used it for traveling. He went down to Mexico, So cal, Nevada, and many more! Somewhere in the 80's he had decided to start a restoration. He welded the trim holes (and sadly warped most of the panels :/ ) Somewhere along the way he had suspended the restoration, and it sat close to 25 years in his barn. He had also owned a 67 and 71 Square in which he stripped a lot of parts! I mean A LOT!

Oh well, you should use those fenders if they aren't rusty. They all are gonna need filler to be perfect. I would drill the holes out again and put new stainless steel trim on it from ISP West in Carson, CA. They have everything for a Type 3. Cool

Besides sanding through lots of filler and many paint layers to find bare metal, The front clip needed to be replaced. So I posted a want ad here on The Samba, and with in a few weeks, my new clip was at my house, sanded down, and welded in!

So a few reasons I wanted the car was, Im a 3rd Generation Volkswagen owner. My Grandfather had a 56 Oval window, and a 60 Bus, and my father had many bugs before he found his 57 Oval he has owned for 22 years now.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Another reason Is I wanted to learn how to paint. I take auto body classes and have been privileged to paint many things such as parts as the passenger side front fender, Semaphores, Tail light housings and license plate light housinf off of my dad's 57 which is Chevrolet Medium Maui Blue Metallic (I colored matched the 22 year paint myself perfectly), 3 stage paint for GTI Parts, parts for a 77 Pontiac Firebird, and even John Deere yellow on a John Deere Deer made in the welding class!

Yours is typical for IL,NY,NJ as far as rust! Good on you for welding it back into shape! Neither my '56 or '57 has semaphores. Is your '57 a Euro model or something?

We've made a few patches, and used a lot of duraglass and lightweight filler. So far Ive got the shell, Hatch, The doors inside and out and the drivers side qtr panel in primer. Im also adding an inspiration shot of what I want the car to look like, Brunswick Blue with a white roof!

We used white Epoxy primer on the shell and hatch, and covered it with 2k High build sandable primer, But just 2k Primer on the rest for two reasons. White epoxy has no corrosion protection, and the huge amount of filler used on the warped panels Embarassed

We pulled the engine out of my square with the plans of rebuilding it stock, and eventually building the second engine I got with it into a 1835. We used a wire wheel and wire disks to clean up the engine tins, and a Harbor Freight parts cleaner with Purple Power for the engine blocks. We had the stock heads rebuilt and got NOS heads when we bought the car to put on the engine for the 1835 Laughing Plan to paint the engine with High temperature paint in a rattle can.

You guys are moving quickly Smile

I have '70 Square and it's in rough shape due to Ohio rust. Right now I want to get it mechanically correct, but sooner than later the body will need attention. You guys are an inspiration Smile

Have fun with the build!

Heres a funny story with in itself. I was at the Litchfield 2012 show when I first laid my eyes on a set of turtlebacks. I had never seen them before, but had the money to buy them, but owed my parents some money for buying the car. I decided to pay them back but kicked myself for not buying them wheels! So the searched began! At first My plans were to paint up the stockies blue and white like the car.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Cleaned them up with some wire disks and 180 grit sand paper

After looking for over a year for a set, I scored big when fellow Samba user Matt Stallard sold me these Silver Turtlebacks WITH CENTER CAPS for $450 Cool Im gonna feel bad painting them to match my car, but wow what a deal!

My Square; I also plan to use Chassis saver underneath the panels, the wheels wells, engine bay, underneath, the floor plans and front trunk where I welded my new clip

It looks like you're making great progress. Nice to see someone not affraid to tackel "east coast/ salt belt" issues. Cool

Will you get it done in time for the 2014 Type 3 Invasion in Fairport NY? That's the big question. Wink Nice work either way. Look at the links in my signature to see how I take care of rust. Shocked

Thanks Bobnotch! Funny you say that because I was talking to a gentlemen at the Litchfield show and he said the same thing! Id love to take it out the Type 3 Invasion! My original goal was two year, and I have plans with my Autobody teacher of getting the car in the paint booth by September. The cars rust isnt as bad as most New england and NY Vw's because it spent time in the dry south west, but its still worth saving to me! Im willing to be most people would have left it as is for a hood ride Rolling Eyes Ill definitely take some time to read up on your tips of rust repair, thank you!
