|
I am planning on installing birch paneling on the ceiling of the 66 13 Window and I have realized I will need a couple of wood bows to take up the gaps between the roof frame.
Anyone ever done this?
I am fairly certain I can lay out the bows myself and cut them.
What I am curious about is should they have a runner on the rail at the edge of the ceiling that the bows attach to to?
Would I need 2 or 3 bows?
I have the baltic birch paneling that I purchased a few years ago. 10-1/8"x4'x10' sheets which I hope to get two 4' panels out of each.
Anyhow, any thoughts, ideas or experience would be much appreciated.
Photos and specs would be helpful too.
Thank you. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Since you will need a panel that is ~50" wide you will need to run a strip down the middle of the roof. Clara makes bows but not for down the middle, IIRC. The bows should look just like the front and rear metal ones that are already welded to the roof and the top of the walls. The bases will need to be set back from the inside lip to accept the edges of the roof panels.
I have never been a fan of the Riviera/Sundial/Caravel, etc... roof layout. But that wasn't your question, now, was it?
Look what I just found!-

I want to try to do them without the seam in the middle.
I also saw this ad from Clara, though I would like to do it myself.

BTW, I know Clara makes quality interior pieces, as I have bought from her before for a SC.
I am trying to do this one all on my own and for the fun of doing it. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

I don't see how you can do this with 48"wide panels unless you do it with the grain running side-to-side. I will reserve comment on this method. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I make three bows, with the seam in the middle, because that is what Westfalia did and I follow them like the proverbial lemming.
The number of the bows shall be three. Thou shalt not count four, nor two, unless immediately proceeding to three. Five is right out.
Possibly you could use two, or four, or five, depending on your design.
There is also the US OTW roof style with the seam down the middle, which takes a wooden brace down the middle.
Westfalia used 'shoehorns' at the sides to shoe horn the roof panels into the inner rain gutter, #8 in diagram.
I used the wrong length shoe horns for these, oops... this length would work better on a flip hatch bus... the seam between shoehorns on each side should be on a bow and tacked in place there. yes, tacked into the metal bow. Don't use long nails or it will dimple the roof out!

BTW, this is just an idea for what I am doing to MY bus.
Aluminum diamond plate at the bottom of the door panels and side panels. The birch I am using is not finished and being used for fitment. Working out some issues as height, how to transition from DP to Birch, etc.
I like the way it looks.

Diamond plate is kinda played out, but I can understand why you'd want something other than a varnished wood panel to take the abuse from water and stuff bouncing around inside the bus down low on the doors. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

I have never used it, so I don't understand the played out.....
I found some aluminum divide to separate the DP from the wood, in 1/8".
Here is a photo of what it looks like. I think it will give it a cleaner look.
